Aside from the predictable and overly used plot, evil corpration + evil Military aginst noble natives, this is the single best SciFi film I have ever seen. The advanced human technology presented is lke no other ever put on film. Real or CGI, the human techolgy is entirely believable. The native civliazaion presented was excptionally well done and entirely believable. I loved this movie,I will see it many times. I recommend it to everyone. You should definately see it in 3D. Avatar is a movie that brings a components of every reason we go to the movies: Action/Adventure, Love/Romance, Story, you name it. It's an understatement to say that the CGI, Imagery and Sensory Overload is what drives this movie. But I think that was Cameron's point wasn't it?
The Story itself is a little bit Dances with Wolves meets Inconvenient Truth meets Transformers.
But it's HOW the story is told that changes the game. The colors, shapes, movement everything creates a visual and audible ballett that "washes over you" (especially when seen in 3D).
By the time the film ends, you will wish you were on Pandora and could be an Avatar!

With some allowances for lifting the basic plot scenario from the cartoon feature "Ferngully", I loved it. Believable biotechnological premise, turns fantasy into captivating science fiction. Never a fan of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, I can say that Cameron captured my interest, while Peter Jackson failed to do so. Bravo.
P.S. I still absolutely hated "Titanic".

this is the reason that 3d was invented. it takes the technology to its limits with a dazzling display of depth and motion that has never been seen before. sure, the plot is predictable, but who cares? you will be so dazzled by what is happening in front (and behind) your eyes that you will have little time to worry about plot intricacies i plan to see it at least one more time, preferably in imax 3d.

I really didn't know what to expect, and the early 'peeks' of the Nav'i didn't look promising (in magazines or newspapers) but it all works very well. it is a very successful blend of science-fiction (the live action segments of the movie) and fantasy (the world of Pandora and the Nav'i). this is the first use of motion-capture (I think Cameron calls it something else) that finally makes sense. and while the story may have been told other times in other ways, I was fully involved in the adventure. see it in 3-D

I had been doubting the desire to see this movie. I didn't understand the concept. This is truly a great movie. 3-D aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the story line. The creatures were interesting the alien jungle was enthralling. The 3-D has come so far. This movie raises the bar for future 3-D flicks. It didn't rely on the typical "jump out at you" effects. The movie technology, and the acting, was great. However, I cannot recommend this movie because of the same old, same old Hollywood liberal story. Big business is bad, indigenous peoples and environmentalists are good. It extends James Cameron's vision of good vs. evil: In the Terminator series, evil big business builds machines that destroy the people. In Titanic, the evil company that owns the Titanic forces the captain to increase the ship's speed beyond reason. Avatar continues this them. We have a greedy corporation using murderous private security personnel, equipped with the latest and greatest weapons, to decimate an an indigenous people for their precious natural resources. Hollywood, please get over it!

The 3D effects are amazing, the technology has come a long way, although still not absolutely perfect - about the same as HD as far as blurriness at high speed. The plot is engaging if predictable. The movie is long but doesn't drag and the audience applauded at the end.

I think this movie ruined all epic and fantasy movies for me for the near future. The world the director creates on Pandora is so realistic and fantastical that I did not want to leave. I felt a strong connection with the characters, especially the Na'vi, whose emotions completely come through - even though they are CGI. Great story line...lots of emotions throughout. I'm going to see it again soon. I highly recommend this movie. FYI - 3D was awesome. Forgot I had the glasses on in the first minute and it really enhanced the experience.

Saw this film with my husband and three adult children. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed; especially the 3D and special effects. I would caution against taking young children. The monsters are very memorable with glaring eyes and razor sharp teeth. Not the stuff of sweet dreams!

The plot is entertaining but a little cliched. The visuals are great though. The planet Pandora and every creature on it is amazing. This is definitely a big step forward in special effects. The 3D is well done and as good as I've seen. It's not used as a gimmick but adds depth to the visuals.

This movie is entertaining in a most unusual way -- you are "engaged" in the movie from the first scene, and remain so throughout. I saw the Real 3D version in a modern stadium-seating theater. There is very little unusual about the story line. What makes the movie memorable is the imersion one feels into the world of the alien moon upon which "Avatar" takes place. You can almost feel the dampness in the forest and the wind on your face. And, if you are a bit afraid of heights, you might feel a little vertigo at times. The movie largely comes off as a well-told story related to us in a magnificent new way. I recommend it to anyone who likes movies. You will not be disappointed.

An overall well executed movie, story line was sort of predictable thought, I'm a little worried at how corporations & capitalism are most of the time portrait evil but that's mainly because of these challenging and dubious political times.
