I really didn't know what to expect, and the early 'peeks' of the Nav'i didn't look promising (in magazines or newspapers) but it all works very well. it is a very successful blend of science-fiction (the live action segments of the movie) and fantasy (the world of Pandora and the Nav'i). this is the first use of motion-capture (I think Cameron calls it something else) that finally makes sense. and while the story may have been told other times in other ways, I was fully involved in the adventure. see it in 3-D
I was a huge Terminator 1 & 2 fan, and then they made 3 which they should NEVER have made....it defeated the whole purpose of 1 & 2. but since they DID make 3, it definitely opened the door up for 4. Christian Bale and Anton Yelchin were fine, Sam Worthington was great, but Byce Dallas Howard was like a fish out of water in this movie - not to mention that there was no reason for her character in the movie at all. there was plenty of action, perhaps at the expense of more story telling, but if you can force yourself to 'suspend your disbelief' you can still have an enjoyable 'escape' at the movie theater.
just as with DaVinci Code, Tom Hanks is horribly miscast as the Harvard symbologist, Robert Landgon to the point of being annoying and unwatchable. the movie looked great - production design, costume design, locations, and action sequences, so perhaps it is worth going to see for those elements alone, but it is definitely a better read than a movie. Ron Howard seems to love that circular camera move (I don't know the technical term) and he uses it to the point of making one aware of it, which to me is a distraction. also, sadly, Hans Zimmer's score is bit overbearing and forgettable (and he is one of my favorite film composers).
the last time I went to the theaters to see a Star Trek movie was for Star Trek 4, but last night I went to see this 'reinvention' and enjoyed it very much. the way the characters are introduced and subsequently developed is a lot of fun, and for those who remember the cast and campiness of the original, there are some homages that inspired a few laughs out loud. there is also one scene that, quite ironically, reminded me of Galaxy Quest. Chris Pine was great, but Zach Quinto's Spock seems to miss the mark a bit. the live action is great, the visual effects good, and the score was fantastic.
