The script is horrible but the technology is amazing. If Dances with Wolves had a baby with The Matrix you would get this movie. Make sure you see this movie in 3D or don't bother. The tecnology is amazing and made the whole movie. It was like nothing I have ever seen before. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of the script.

My impression was a combo of Jurassic Park, Terminator, Aliens, and The Last of the Mohicans. Dialogue was a tad cheesy at times and how could the gunner in the helo hang out w/o a rebreather mask? Big tech error. No black actors so I guess the story line was how the white man stole the land from the Indians. If I want to see a film w/ a political statement, I'll go see a Michael Moore or Al Gore flick. Mostly a sop to the tree huggers. In spite of all this, I did enjoy the movie. My guess for a sequel will be the company will come back w/ nukes and lay waste to Pandora but unknown to them is that the natives have met Yoda and can now use the Force. Huu-yaa!

If nothing else, see this movie for the exceptional technology. The movie won't win Moive of the Year, but I don't think thats what James Cameron was going for. The 3D and vibrant colors, and animation were excellent. Entertaining, and thats why I go to the movies!

James Cameron is a cinamatic Genius. Avatar is by far the greatest movie I have ever seen and i highly recomend it to any sci fi buff and and fantasy freaks out there. Excellant experience! Never liked 3D before now but loved it for this movie. Story line is cliche, but how can it not be? The characters were lickable and understandable. The 'evil' character isn't beyond redemption and his motivations are understandable. Didn't require 'ultimate' good and evil to enjoy this movie. I intend to watch it again in Imax 3D and this is the 4th movie I've seen this year! My first review as well.

Yes, the storyline is somewhat predictable and the characters broadly drawn, but this movie's story is still engaging and the effects superb. The pacing was nice, neither rushed nor slow and the action was appropriate (not over the top.)
In short, I was very pleasantly surprised by this and will be returning to see it again. If you have the option to see it in 3D, it will be even more stunning.

The good:
3D was a real addition to the experience of the movie. Great depth and realism.
CG was definitely taken to a new level. CG was 99% realistic. Scenery was incredibly real, CG-only scenes were smooth. The flora and fauna of Pandora were imaginative and believable. Action scenes were exciting.
The "meh":
The movie was 3D, but the storyline was 2D -- predictable and not extremely satisfying; just passable.
Obvious Native American parallel was just a bit too "in your face".
Ending didn't satisfy. What happens if the Earth folks come back with a huge armada?
Overall, a really good movie that pushed CG to a level that finally makes it seem like a viable replacement for "reality"... That seems like an oxymoron...

Saw it today in 3D. Would not want to try it in 2D. Seriously considering seeing it at IMAX.
I remember when Star Wars came out and it set the bar then for this genre. Even though the storyline was weaker than expected it was a spectacle anyway and will set the bar for this movie genre now!

I was expecting the cheesy 3D & special effects we all know (& don't love). I wasn't expecting to enjoy the movie. The 3D made you feel like you are apart of the movie rather than just a spectator. Although the plot was often obvious & predictable, it was very enjoyable. I enjoyed all of the 'good' characters. The acting was very well done. Overall, I did not feel that I had sat in the mildly uncomfortable, squeaky movie chairs for almost three hours; instead, I felt that I had seen another masterpiece of Mr. Cameron's. However, due to the violence, language, & amount of skin shown in the movie, I wouldn't take small children. I would definitely recommend this movie!!!! It is a movie that I plan on buying!

Most amazing visuals I have ever seen. Beautiful movie. Amazing effects. Can't wait to see a commentary/interview on how they made the movie. Yes it was a tiny bit slow in places. Yes it's a story that we've seen, heard, read before, BUT that doesn't make it any less entertaining, meaningful, awe-inspiring, thoughtful, scary, hopeful. 3-D was done so well, that I didn't even realize it was 3-D-very subtle, well done. Acting was great, believable and moving. I disagree with another reviewer who said it painted the military in a bad light. Military aren't in the movie. Ex military as well as others who just like to kill things for money are hired by "big business" as mercenaries. Big Business. Money. Greed. Those are the bad guys here.

Spectacle of it was very entertaining. Made me think of the fist release of Star Wars. t he characters were a bit underdeveloped. The movie storyline is a good concept. No exceptional acting. The 3-D was absolutely amazing. It wasn't in your face over the top. James Cameron used it to add depth and create a realistic view. The vibrant colors were great eye pleaser. It could have been 20 minutes shorter. I would highly recommend it for the 3-D experience. Wouldn't bother to pay to see it in 2-D. Saw Avatar in 3D on an Ultrascreen on Christmas night. While my husband thought the story line was a bit weak, we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience! It is a MUST to see it in 3D!! The special effects and beautiful scenery are absolutely awesome in 3D!! We all thought it warranted all the hype, the long line, and the $16 a piece we paid to see it! Highly recommend this movie experience!

Beyond any cinematic experience I have ever had. Must see in 3D. A movie that leaps and bounds beyond what we have technically accomplished before. You will wonder all the way thru--how did they do that? and then, you are simply in the world, all the way to the end. You walk out shaking your head and not having any words that can really explain what you just saw. I will go again and probably again and I rarely do that. Just see it on 3D on a good screen. Do not wait to see this On Demand. It deserves much more and you will have missed a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Beautiful movie. Sci-fi, romance, action it has it all. So sad to see the people that write bad reviews on this movie, they have lost touch with the joy and wonderment of being a child. This is a fantastic movie. Even my jaded husband (who is in the biz himself ) never left his seat for the whole two and a half hours. Sensitive and awe inspiring. James Cameron has created a fantastic alternate world. My highest recommendation!

My husband and I took our son to see this movie and we were totally captivated by the visuals of this awsome movie. The 3D was the cherry on top of this revolutonary ground breaking movie. I do hope there will be a sequel!

while really, really enjoying this stunning movie, what's with all the pre-movie commercials??? movie previews are one thing, but 15 mins. of television show and product commercials are a bit too much...I can get (and avoid these) at home and don't have to pay $15 to do it. if anything these commercials turn me off to their products cause they are soooo annoying. having said that, the movie was great...when we finally got to it

Indeed as the title suggest, technical achievement at it's finest, these blue aliens look as if they are real and believeable, at first I questioned it myself upon seeing the trailers, but sure enough Cameron doe not dissapoint! He found the balance of putting in real life shots and cgi together to make a believable looking alien and planet, none of that fake and unrealistic stuff that Lucas did in his last 3 star wars movies, can you say cgi overkill? To top it off his storytelling was so simple, to the point and very poignant. Cameron's the man, bow down to the master! Happy Holidays everyone! :)
