superb period details, 1962 California (I was there and Mad Men is a cartoon compared to this fine film) excellent first directing outing for Mr. Ford great film with texture and nuance great performance by Firth best gay theme film ever made

This is a movie that is subtle, the main character is very British in almost every way. Which makes his journey that much more amazing as he begins to let himself feel more and more. Pay attention to everything, the little detail. You will find a superb performance by Colin Firth, so subtle and so human. This is a movie that reminds us all just how human we really are, and I'm very glad Tom Ford made it.

Tom Ford's directing debut is outstanding! Details and emotions are accentuated in this film and help to magnify Isherwood's work. Colin Firth's portrayal of Prof. George Falconer is worthy of an Oscar nomination. Ford's use of metaphor and imagery, and fantasy switching from b/w to color cinematography makes you feel like your are watching a classic. There is a quiet demeanor about the pace & tenor of this film, and at times it can appear disconnected or disjointed from the subject matter, but Ford manages this very well along with a superb cast of actors that help this film speak volumes to its audience. Love, loss, depression, renewal, peace.

In an era where the gay minority was "invisible", we are given a first-hand look at that experience through the eyes of George, who questions whether life is worth living after losing his partner of 16 years. It's an absorbing character study. He is excluded from the lover's funeral by the family, his best friend tells him he wasted those years, and they should have been together, and many everyday things prompt bittersweet reminiscences of his lost love. Firth's performance is stellar; Moore's is good, but she can't maintain that british accent. A solid performance by Hoult, the empathetic college student. This is an impressive film, made more so by the fact that it is Ford's first directorial attempt.
