Tilda Swinton is the best reason to see this film - she is one the best actors working today. In this viewer's opinion she is worth seeing in anything. This is also a wonderfully well made movie, beautiful to behold in every scene indoors and out. It held my attention throughout and there is not a moment of gratuitous violence or tension. My only quibble and it's a small one, there are actions and behaviors from time to time that are inconsistent with what we have learned already about these characters.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie fell flat for me. There isn't any interesting dialogue and l didn't care about any of the characters. I was also disappointed with the cinematography. It's not the worst film I've seen but it definitely wasn't worth the twelve bucks.

The relationships were complex, scenery was excellent, with the exception of the lack of visual focus in some scenes. I liked the way the scenes changed. The rituals at dinner were interesting. I didn't mind the english subtiles. The apparent contradictions in the normal, expected behaviors in an upper class european family, gave the movie an interesting quality. This movie needs more than one viewing to really take in the plot.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

After reading the reviews of this"opulent" film and being fans of Tilden Swinton we went to see it. We do no know what the reviewers saw, but it was not this film. A story that needed chemistry between people had none. A film that needed beautiful photography had none. A waste of talent and time. Alas, should have been done by Ivory/Merchant. Sorry we were very disappointed.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I agree with the review about the absurd twist in this movie. There was no motivation shown in the character of the upper-class wife twho falls for a cook who appeared so blank. We are supposed to see this film as a heating up of a cold marble-like woman into a sensous lover who is overcome by the world of taste and smell and sex and nature and love; but it plays instead as a movie about a cipher of a woman who is malignantly narcissisitc who falls for a cipher. Her decision to tell her husband of her lover at her son's funeral was almost laughable if it hadn't been so cruel and self-involved and mean-spirited. I lost any interest in her after that and agreed with the husband's condemnation of her. The idea of her daughter as approving of her breaking boundaries as she had with her lesbian lover was also cliched and might appear sophisticated if you were from, say, Indiana. Nice photography, but too mannered.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I loved it. The photography was breathtaking, lots of tyle. The meals ritual and the chores around the house were a pleasure to watch. I particularly liked the fact that it was in Italian with English subtiles. Yeah, there were scenes a bit too long and the music was so good at at times but between the movie Inception (which I saw the day before) and I am love, I liked the latter much better and I am glad I saw it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Others have mentioned the beauty of this movie, but in the few reviews I read there was no mention of the relationship between the daughter and mother. Both left the societal comfort of the upper class to live their own lives. I thought the scene when Swinton's hair is cut was extremely touching and telling. The story and the breathtaking beauty of this film is still with me.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

“I Am Love” is an odd mongrel. The opening scene, the multi-generational dinner headed by the patriarch, is spot-on in its subdued opulence and style. Being from Milan myself and coming from a similar background, I can affirm that such a style goes even beyond that pertaining to a small industrialist’s family, but seeing a Melzi d’Eril as one of the producers explains it, as he is the scion of an ancient aristocratic family. So, for once the waiters offer the food on the right side and take away the plates on the left—they get this right and believe me, it seldom happens on the silver screen. Other than that, a film that could (should?) have been about the changing of epochs, and would have been very interesting for all that this implies, suddenly takes a detour which remains, to the end, baffling and inexplicable. We are to believe that the foreign woman – Emma – who married into the wealthy Milanese family and grew up in Communist Soviet Union was already a great cook there, thanks to her granny’s cooking (but, in all seriousness, has any critic tasted Russian food?). Also, we are supposed to believe that her caged-up persona is suddenly and at long last released by the food of Antonio, a bearded, self-effacing and rather expressionless man the age of her son. And this woman, who for her whole life has cultivated a certain image and not without great rewards, given her lifestyle, throws it all away for a cook—and not just any cook, but her son’s best friend and business partner. The Deus ex Machina comes when the son figures out what the mother has been up to, confronts her, accidentally falls, and hits his head with a very distinct THUMP. And Emma has the good taste to tell her husband that she’s in love with the cook at their son’s funeral. After the credits, we see Emma and Antonio together as lovers in a grotto he had taken her to before close to his restaurant in the hills.
Motivation is what moves characters. What Emma does is not believable because we fail to understand what on earth could motivate her to throw everything away for Antonio the cook? Even the choice of his name is awkward: doesn’t the Italian director remember the famous film Il bell’Antonio, by Mauro Bolognini? Well, this Antonio is not bello, far from it, so, for the Russian woman to fall for him, his cooking must be truly phenomenal, or outright uncanny. In sum, a promising beginning, and then all is lost by the wayside, by the nettles that Antonio may well use for a risotto. The use at times of the hand held camera was also annoying.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
