I am old fashion enough to expect mysteries resolved by the end of a movie, so I was initially disappointed when it ended otherwise. Yet it captured my fascination at every moment, and I believed I was watching events happening to real people, in the setting my father described when relating his growing up in Germany as a child before World War I. The black and white was especially effective in conveying the mood. Repeatedly horrified by what seemingly good people can do to one another, culminating in the start of World War I, I concluded that this was the message of the film itself: We should all think harder about why there is so much evil in the world, and what part do we play in perpetuating it, or preventing it. Superbly crafted.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Viewers seeing this movie should be prepared for a moving account of a village struggling with many issues. Class conflict, gender conflict and well as intergenerational relationships are tackled without obvious resolution. The action takes place in 1914, and I found all the actors convincing for this time period. The brutal burden of village expectations have lessons for today. The subtitles are easy to follow and capture the essence of the dialog, although some of the text is simplified. For people who know a little German (like me) the speakers are clear and easy to follow. This movie will engage anyone eager for more than simple entertainment.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Beautifully shot in black and white, intriguing shots, one after another. Thought-provoking, a little obscure, while the violence is key. it is cruel and as it builds toward war, it is unrelenting and tension filled, even the romance, though more humanistic and warmer, serves it or is overwhelmed by it. it is stark as the black and white, with no music.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a terrific movie about a small German town where killings and ritualized tortures begin to occur just before World War I breaks out. The characters are very well developed and a sense of intrigue builds throughout the film, which culminates in an ending that's unlike any I've seen. Those who like well written, well developed characters and a substantial storyline will appreciate this methodically told movie in German. If you're lucky enough to see this film in a theater with assigned seating, choose a seat that's in the center of the theater to make it easier to read subtitles for 2 1/2 hours.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
