The characters were gems. Each one was polished to bring out its essence. Everyone hiding something from the family. The hidden glances and the way each character was caught doing something by another family-member was believeable and quit funny. A nice little polished movie with some great laughs.

What a happy surprise to find this movie! It's the best film I've seen so far this year. Nothing deep but thoroughly entertaining with a string of characters whose intertwining stories keep you engrossed through to the satisfying ending.
As quirky as its setting, it has the disfunctional Bronx Italian-American family down pat and effectively uses these stereotypes in a believabe and humorous way. I even caught a few allusions to another favorite NewYork-centered film: Breakfast at Tiffanys.

What a fun film! Sure, the plot was a bit predictable, but so are many films nowadays. It's nice to see NYC in a film more or less as it is (sans potholes and traffic, though) and focusing on one of its eccentric parts is good for perspective. Of course, the film is not about City Island, but about this initially dysfunctional family who gets it together in the end. In that way, they nearly feel like a metaphor for New York itself. The actors all bring the characters to life and though they flirt with caricature, it still feels real. There were quite a few laughs and giggle all the way through, but you can't call this a laugh-a-minute film. However, for us it made the perfect night out.

Good characters, good acting, a lot of amusing bits (not belly laughs but fun), plot is predictable but still fun. I never knew about existence of City Island so that was cool.

City Island is one of those great little gems or indie's that you come across from time to time. And Andy Garcia, Julia Marguiles shine in it, as does the wonderful poker faced Alan Arkin. The two young guys in the movie also steal the show at times. Very talented and charming cast.

A great cast gives an amazingly sensitive but funny portrait of a quirky family whose members have lost touch with one another. It's about taking chances, sharing real feelings, and being true to oneself and to those you truly care about. A real high.
