A solid, competent production of -- sad to say --a relatively static opera. Slimmer, more attractive lead performers would have been an improvement. Dolora Zajick, who "owns" the role of Amneris, should relinquish her 20 year lease. For me, the most enjoyable performances were those of Amonasro and the High Priest. With all the hype, the Met should do better.

Johann Botha got the job done as Rhadames but I prefer a more romantic voice in this role-- Botha has a very heavy Wagnerian voice,but neverthe less he was convincing as the warrior, Violeta Urmana, was wonderful in her Aida presentation -- Maybe a little too edgy on her top notes - producing a bit of a shrill but not sure if that was a technical flaw in the sound- The sound was very loud where I sat Dolora Zajick was the big star with her menacing voice and strong presentation-- The reigning Mezzo in Verdi opera. Carlo Guelfi was disappointing as Amonasro , although his acting did pick up in his big act with the lovely duet with Aida- however a rather gruff sounding voice-- No warmth here---

As usual, the Metropolitan Opera did a wonderful job with Aida. The sets and costumes were magnificent and the singers were great.

I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. However I would like to make several comments... 1. Sometimes it seemed like the camera was constantly moving - in and out, side to side, etc. 2. I would like to see the set changes and the opening - when the auditorium lights are pulled upand the overture begins - as the audience sees them.

Aida has it all--beautiful arias, spectacle, ballet, and an interesting plot. The cast was strong. Violeta Urmana (Aida) was very good, but perhaps not great. She has a tough act to follow--Leontyne Price. Perhaps I would have liked a little more dramatic intensity. Johan Botha (Radames) was definitely superior--his voice sounds more Germanic than Italian, and remarkably light considering his own considerable physical heft. Dolora Zajick (Amneris) was excellent as usual--I have always liked her, and I think she did the best acting job of the bunch. Carlo Guelfi (Amonasro) and Stefan Kocan (The King) were also good. The only one I didn't like so much was Roberto Scandiuzzi (Ramfis)--I thought he sounded old.

The singing, the costumes, the staging, the dancers, the behind the scene interviews, -- pretty much everything was fantastic. I enjoyed the overhead camera shots myself. The ballet scenes after the Triumphal March were superb. It definitely added. What a production. I enjoyed it greatly. I've seen many Met HD's over the last few years and each one gets better and better. Having lived in NY and visited the Met, seeing these performances bring me back home. The Met strives for perfection in every way and pretty much gets there.

The production of this Aida was outstanding. I have seen several Aidas but no one like this breath taking production. The singers were right for the roll. Specially Violeta Umana. Her voice range and her beautiful pianos were uplifting. The scenery was absolutely fantastic. I am giving a definitely thumb up to this Aida. I will recommend it to all my friends and family.

The singers were excellent; the acting was passable, especially for opera... The intermissions were very interesting, giving us a chance to see what goes on backstage during such a production. However, the sound and camera work were not acceptable. For starters, the sound was exceedingly loud, even distorted - this is great for action movies, but not for opera, where the emphasis is on pleasing sound, not excessive sound... As for camera work, there were too many closeups, keeping the movie viewers from seeing the entire stage, all the action, and fully enjoying the total Grand Opera experience.
