Story-wise it's serviceable and fine. You'll notice ideas taken from many other movies. But as far as the "experience" I have never seen anything like it in my 39 years of watching movies.
I saw it on an IMAX 3D screen and after the first 20 minutes my eyes "adjusted" (I'd never seen an IMAX 3D movie before) and the "real" world ceased to exist and there was only Pandora. I really don't know what else to say other than "SEE IT!!!!"

I had no idea what the movie was going to be about and immediately was mezmerized by the "fantasy" of the special effects and so intrigued by the storyline. 3-D has come a long way and the 2 hrs. 40 mins. flew by....I didn't want it to be over! BRAVO!

This was my first 3D IMAX movie, so I was blown away, it was an amazing experience, worth every penny and the wait in line. This type of entertainment will bring me back to the movies.
My only gripe is with the theater - they let anybody into the IMAX, they did not check tickets. It's not fair for people who bought tickets to Chipmunks to be in line ahead of me for 3D IMAX, when I paid for 3D IMAX, and they should not get first pick of seats either.
And please don't bring your babies to the movies, especially a 3 hour IMAX movie!

Saw the movie yesterday. The special effects are great but I was a little disappointed. With 3D, there is usually things coming at you that make you jump but not in this movie. I thought the movie could have been shortened, how many minutes do you need to see them flying around on their birds? We know there is something under the tree that is wanted but there is no reason stated why. Couple of loose ends. My overall reaction is that if there is a part 2 I will not go see it and wish I had the money back on this one.

Am I the only person who thinks that using Bush-isms is tired and just a bad practice? Apparently, the creators of the wonderfully made movie "Avatar" disagree. I do love the movie, and will probably watch it again, this time not in 3D, but the portrayal of the military was simply too over the top for me. (And I'm a "Liberal"...) The story is great and touches on many trials that we humans encounter, but never give all that much thought too, namely, being handicapped / the use of one's legs. This movie is a definite must see, even with the over-used, "heartless & ignorant" military portrayal.

Yes, amazing visuals and sound making it impossible to tell where reality ends and virtual begins. On way to movie, noticed beautiful wooded area had recently been clear cut for another strip mall development...maybe Avatar will help us think more about what is important.

Much like the original Star Wars, this movie takes takes the experience of film to a whole new level. Awesome visuals, engaging storyline -- I barely realized that 2 3/4 hours had passed! Definitely worth seeing in the theater -- and more than once. This is the most innovative and exciting film I have seen in decades!

I loved this movie - I loved the idealistic, spiritual element to it. Not that there isn't violence in it - in fact, more than I liked. But I just loved the fantasia - the Pandorans too are such beautiful, noble creatures, majestic and godlike. They are a combination of American Indians and Africans. The story itself is very simple. But worth seeing more than once on Imax 3D!

the majority of reviews on here are excellent, but there are some pretty extreme views the other way. look .. If you are going to go to this movie, and expect Oscar winning acting performances, or an original plot ... no you aren't going to get that. and if you are offended by the political undertones in the movie ... well, lighten up.
But if you go and allow yourself to be taken away and entertained ... you will be amazed. Amazing graphics, an entertaining storyline, and well developed personalities and relationships in the movie make this an incredibly enjoying experience for all ages. Myself and my entire family were captivated for the full time and talked about it for hours afterwards.

This is movie is setting a new bar: yes the story is a bit predictable but the visual experience and attention to details brings movie making to a total new level. Naturally go for the IMAX experience....one warning after this you will want to throw away your 1080 HD TV.

This is a must see for all movie buffs. James Cameron has really surpassed high art movie making with this blockbuster. Themes abound throghout the movie. It offers, love, action, hi-tech special effects, drama, comedy and whatever theme your looking for it has. The Imax 3-D version is the way to view this movie.
Forgrt the critics that call this racist or political. Get what you will from watching Avatar, but just enjoy the story and be prepared to be "awesomefied." I was.

The Imax version of this movie is definitely the best visual display for it. There is so much detail to all the graphics that you need a larger screen to truly appreciate it all.
The story line is phenomenal. You get to know the characters and you grow to love the hero and dislike the villain. I even cried during one scene.
I have to say that it is on my list of one of the best movies ever made.

It would be hypocritical to not note that the most impressive feature about this movie is the visuals. Not only do they dominate what this movie represents, but also define what is so remarkable about it as well.
With that on the table, the plot, storyline and acting are fantastic. There are those that would say that the plot is a rehash. I agree, it is. But then again, in today's cinema, what movie doesn't resemble another? Originality is creating something more that what you see. I'd be far more disappointed if it was unoriginal. That, it definitely is not.
Highly recommended.

This movie has moved the bar on production standards and changed the way movies will be judged. You can't watch this movie at home no matter the sophistication of your home theater system. To appreciate the experience you must see it in 3D and preferably in IMAX. Expect to be transported to a different world.

Awesome visual and audio experience. The movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes but it will grab your attention and you will be entertained. The story is a basic love story with good vs evil or major conflict but very nicely done. Think American indians vs American soldiers.

I saw Avatar on my B-day 3d was broken but still saw the Imax version, I instantly fell in love with this movie. Saw it a week later in Imax 3D and was just blown away. Avatar is profound and powerful. I recomend that everyone wo has the chance to see this movie. The CGI is just phenomenal. Music awesome and for me the story was great!

"Avatar" in 3-D Imax is an amazing experience. The story line is the usual "tree forest people" mythical tale that tells the story of the deep issues and divisions of our current national and world life.
The story is told well, but it is the artistry of contemporary visual graphics that provide a seamless movement from reality to fantasy. They allow one to fall into the story and be there. If for no other reason, anyone who loves the visual arts and film-making needs to see this file to see an emerging future in that medium.

As owner of an animation and visual effects company, I have to but kowtow to James Cameron this time, for his unmatchable dedication and contribution to special effects and movie industry as a whole. This is a total rip off of "Dances With Wolves." The entire story is nothing but a complete and total rehash of that movie. Avatar is to DWW what "Clueless" was to "Emma," a low rent imitation. Actually Cluess did it better and did admit that it was what it was. Predictable? Worse...it had every cliche of movie making combined with outdated stale dialouge. 3D effects were nice, but nothing I did not see at Disney World or in the (much better movie) "Christmas Carol." I am all for using the best of bleeding edge tech in movie making but NOT at the expense of good story telling. Oh and to ADD the huge and undeserved profit of this, love scenes were filmed but are saved for the Blue Ray release.

The hype on this movie is justified. I do not like SciFi, but I can appreciate when a project like this is done. Obviously, anything James Cameron is a part is expected to be larger than life...and this one hit a grand slam!! A MUST SEE IN IMAX 3D!!
