This is the one that will spawn a whole new generation of fans and clubs and linguistic studies. James Cameron has obviously borrowed (and heavily) from the great storytellers including Tolkien, Blake, Lucas, Bradbury, Clark, Kubrick, etc. However, he has remarkably made this his own.
Yes, the plot is "predictable". So what's wrong with a movie that leaves you feeling this good? It takes you to a place that you want to visit again as soon as the closing credits begin. The five stars next to the title are from average movie goers, not film critics. That should tell you all you need to know. DO see it on an Imax 3-D screen if you can.

Went to see Avatar in IMAX 3D this weekend, it was incredible! The depth perception from the 3D display made the movie experience very immersive, but even without it this story would be well worth seeing on a 2D screen if you don't want to pay extra for the 3D (although the IMAX and/or standard 3D tickets are not much more expensive and well worth the cost). James Cameron has done it again!

The visuals were stunning. The plot was not the star but adequate. Nonetheless, I found the movie thoroughly enjoyable. I would have liked to give it 5 stars because its strengths were so outstanding, but it was not a perfect movie in all respects. If there had been a 4.5 star rating, I would have taken that one.

I waited to see this in IMAX 3D and it was well worth it. This film was an experience. The only thing that comes to mind as a comparison, is the first time I saw Star Wars in the theatre back in the late 70's - and I realize the gravity of that statement. I am not saying Avatar was equal - but it was a roundbreaking film - the first of its kind - and absolutley mesmerizing.
I know it seems like a long film - but I wish it had been longer.

If you've seen The Last Samurai or Dances with Wolves, you've seen this movie. The storyline is old: Young hero of an evil white race originally participates in initiatives to dominate the indigenous clans of a foreign nation, but realizes the errors of his ways and eventually fights against his own. However, despite the over-used theme, the stunning visual and audio affects of the IMAX experience is worth the $$ and truly sets the stage for the future of film making.

This is a great movie.
We viewed it in IMAX 3D - however, you need to be aware that many of the Regal/AMC IMAX branded are not 'real' IMAX experiences. Be sure to seek out a real IMAX theater (i.e. Giant Screen) if you are going to view it in IMAX 3D.
Also take the time to watch how they made the movie, all in all lives up to a good deal of the hype.

Rarely, does a film represent a major breakthrough and a shift in the industry. With a screenplay which is far better than anticipated, an outstanding cast and the iconic IMAX - 3D format, one knows each time it is watched that a unique sense of being part of a histroric experience will swell inside you over and over again. I have seen Avatar 5 times now.
I saw AVATAR on opening day on non-IMAX, non-3D. I thought it was the most visually stunning, non-stop action, touching romance story I had (literally) ever seen. For me its a story of re-birth focused on one individual, Jake Suli, but also focused on both our society and on the Na'vi society. I found my initial experience of watching the movie just about overwhelming - particularly the musical score and the imagery of a totally alien world that made six legged horses, and humanoids that were ten feet tall ... all believable.
THEN... on the second day of release I saw AVATAR in IMAX-3D... Instead of seeing a spectacular movie - I was part of an alien world and the struggle on it between good and evil.

This movie is phenomenal. It was very well balanced in terms of real-life action and CG effects. It did not have that fake feel to it that the "updated" Star Wars did. The character development was well paced and definitely makes you sympathize with them.
I don't like spoilers and that's why I'm not being too specific. However, the point is - watch it and then DO something to help us, as human beings, help our planet. The move is strong and thought provoking. My only hope is that the emotion and passion it brings out in us at the theatre will continue to live on just as strongly in our daily lives.

I really didn't know what to expect, but from hearing the general storyline I expected to see a little bit of action and otherwise be bored, as I am with most Sci-Fi movies. I was completely blown away. It started out a little bit like Fern Gully, but it really got better and better. I would definitely say this is one great movies of the decade.

Even though the story line is interesting, it seem to be a mixture of familiar themes,(think the first film from the MATRIX series). The story is told at a very good pace and is easy to follow.
Be sure to see this movie in IMAX 3D! Very visual to the point of overwhelming beauty. I observed some viewers get quite teary when viewing the landscapes.

I didn't know the storyline or much about the movie when I went to see it but I was pleasantly surprised. Although there were a few weak spots in the plot, the story was really good and the special effects were awesome. It 's one I would definitely go see again.

This is a must see movie. The visuals will knock your socks off... It is amazing. I took 16 peeples to this and they loved it. This will change 3D films that follow it.

James Cameron has shifted the direction of the cinema for years to come. After hearing about the visual spectacle of this film, I was fully prepared to be dazzled, but all expectations were exceeded! I was unprepared for the provocative nature of the film and its underlying themes and strenuously disagree with 'Professionals' who would indict this film for lack of a story line. (I appreciate the connection my kids will now have to the historic treatment of indigenous people around the planet)! BRAVO!!!

Great movie, stunning visuals, the IMAX experience really enhanced the 3-D affect.
I've seen it both as 3-D and IMAX 3-D strongly recommend the IMAX 3-D to get the most out of the 3-D effects. Storyline is as old as the hills and still a thrilling. Absolutly loved it

This movie has everything. Went to the IMAX theater and this is the best way to enjoy all the visual treats this movie has to offer. Downright beautiful. The story line and the action was great and seamless. Everyone in the theater was entranced. Will go again and again. It is an amazing experience. Hats off to the actors that filled the characters with fantastic personality and soul. Without them this movie would not have the impact that it does.

Loved the movie. Great Action and graphics...even the plot was good. I do believe that the ticket pickup could be improved. Had to wait in line at the ticket window and at the doors. Seems if I was buying them in advance, this shouldn't be this way.

It's the rare movie that I want to see again. I've seen this twice now and I could definitely see again!! Too much to take in. The weakest point is the story line. A little predictable. But WHO CARES!. Visually stunning.

The buzz/hype about how this type of movie changes the movies experience is NO hype at all. I saw this movie while on vacation in "real3D" with some of the family. Upon my return I had to take some other parts of the family to watch it Again in IMAX 3D. Deep story, great action, and did i mention its in "3D!"!!! . woth paying for it twice. Well done.

This is an awesome movie. I am so glad we drove the 40 miles to see it at the IMAX. It is so cool to see this in 3D. The special effects were really cool. James Cameron certainly outdid himself on this one.

Saw this one first in 3D, but went to see it again in IMAX. Does not compare to this one. Was much better to see. More details and realistic feeling, as if you right there.
