This was a good solid movie. All good SF movies show you something new. This one does. It doesn't earn the 5th star IMHO because it lacked the 'WOW" factor for me.
Cameron does an excellent job getting the most of existing technology. It is hard to see where reality ends and animation begins.
I watched this in a newer, AMC-converted IMAX. For me, it wasn't the same as what I would consider true IMAX. Also, I don't know that you need to watch this film in 3D afterall.
In the end, the movie was enjoyable, and I would purchase it again on DVD or Blu-Ray.

Cameron has broken ground on a visually stimulating experience unlike any movie ever produced or directed for our generation. The "eye candy" is overwhelming, Absolutely wonderful. The ability to provide perspective, Correct motion balance, visual overlays with seemingly real transitions between scenes in an animated environment without being cheap and demeaning to the viewer is worth it's weight in the ticket price for IMAX.
IMAX 3D experiences is the ONLY way to see this movie. Cut a gift to a person you really didn't like anyway and treat yourself.
I would have given it 5 stars but the story line was a bit "Tree Hugging" but I did enjoy the technology in conjunction with nature theme..

Loved every minute of this movie. Even though it was 2:40 long it did not seem that way .I was engaged with this movie from the start. It was like I was mind linked to the characters too.

Me and my 10yr old boy, 5 yr old boy and 8yr old girl saw Avatar IMAX3D experience and all loved it! What was was a pleasent surprize was the love story the entire movie was built around (Titanic on Pandora). We knew we were going to get the best special effects that 300-500 million could buy but this movie actually had an interesting story line. Let face it your not going to see Schindlers list or "the piano" but are going to get away (far far away) for three hours and enjoy a visually stimulating and (Surprizingly) a very emotional story. As you can see it is a movie any age or gender can appreciate. Good for romance movie lovers, tech geeks, kids who like seeing things blown up.

Fantastic film. Will see it again. Modern retelling of story found in almost every culture's folklore what happens when greed and a disregard for the rights of the individual is paramount. Wonderful for all ages only one scene is truely frightening ( jake sully being attacked by wild dogs). Beautiful film , original presentation with a "humanitarian" message. Was able to get to know and care about the characters. In the age of SAW , Transformers etc. which are all action and no story whatsoever it was very refreshing to see. Excellent

Me an my husband have never been to IMAX 3D before, and this movie was absolutely amazing, we were told just to go for the special effects, and not to pay attention to the story line because it wasn't good, but I loved every piece of the movie.. The story line was amazing, the special effects were out of this world!! All I said to my mother in law was "OMG, amazing, awesome!" It is a must see movie for everyone.

I didn't expect to like this movie and I was right. I loved it. The story has been done before but never this well.
Cameron created a whole new world that is so seamless you easily accept it as reality. The whole thing is so good that you'll find yourself ready to cry at some points and cheering at other times.
Go see this film. You'll be glad you did.

The movie in IMAX 3D brings the viewer right into the jungles and on floating rocks of Pandora. You are a witness!
Hold on for a ride...The lifelike sounds and visual interactions with the Avatars, indigenous Na'vi and unique animals all feed the plot to allow the story convey several messages.
Star Wars and Terminator are like a Tom and Jerry cartoon in comparison to Avatar. A must see movie.

I've been waiting for this movie for a year now and I must say it delivered on every expectation I had.
The cinematography, special effects and story line were top notch. I could not have asked for a better movie going experience with the exception of the 3D glasses provided.
Granted, I didn't have to purchase them, but they were totally uncomfortable for both myself and my girlfriend. But it didn't ruin the experience by any means.

Wow. This is what has been missing in cinema for years....imagination and vision. Overall one of the best movies i have seen in ten years.. Visually this movie is not matched by any yet. Visually this movie on a 1 to 10 scale gets a 12. For a story it gets a 9. So its easy to say it evens out to be a perfect movie. I must say you must see it in I-MAX 3D. Even if you don't you still will be amazed. To sum up this movie in a few words... Amazing, stunning, and a great fuel for the imagination.

I attended this movie with a friend, we saw it in an IMAX 3D theater which I think is the only way to see this movie; as the the 3D effects are truly AMAZING! We were a little late, and so we had to sit in the sixth row, at first I thought that this was too close, but then our eyes got used to the distance and the 3D and then everything fell into place. We felt transported to the planet Pandora, we felt as if we were immersed into the movie's enviornment!

A stunningly beautiful movie with a wonderful message applicable to people of all ages and all walks of life. Go see this movie in its full glory, if you can, in IMAX 3D. The new 3D technology allows you to feel like you're part of the scene. It's a huge breakthrough in how we will experience movies in the future, and I can't imagine a better movie for this breakthrough than this one, with its message that we are all connected.

Avatar is amazing. Not since the first Star Wars has there been such a leap forward in the film experience. It's more like being in that world than anything before. The 3D Imax was incredible,, best 3D ever, but never got in the way of the story which is pitch perfect! Leaves you breathless and totally satisfied.

Saw this movie in 3-D Imax and all I can say is.......WOW!!!! The storyline, the plot, the graphics, the scenes; just amazing!!! I don't know how I'm going to enjoy this when it comes out on DVD or Blue Ray because of the action that I saw on the big screen. This movie is going to become a classic. Mr. Cameron, you've really out done yourself. Hope this movie makes a billion dollars. It has that potential. Go Na'vi's!!!!!

Just saw this one today in IMAX 3D and let me tell you, it was absolutely stunning. I did not feel as if I was watching a heavily CGI produced picture and the 3D effects were done extremely well. I enjoyed the story and character development, very engrossing scifi story. This is definitely going on my favorite movies of all time. Please see this in the theaters on the biggest 3D screen you can find.

Unbelievable! This is my second time seeing this movie and the attention to detail is absolutely incredible. The story is so profound and I can only hope that we can bring the lessons learned on Pandora back to Earth, lol. James Cameron remains one of the greats and I love that this movie is extremely appropriate for kids as well as adults. The acting was impeccable, the concept is transcendent, and the visual effects??? C'MON! CRAZY!!

My brother and I saw this movie and afterwords he summed it up pretty well by saying, "Avatar is one of the few movies that can stand alone on its visuals." I agree, the visuals are incredible. The story by no means is revolutionary, but there are definitely some unique (yet somewhat familiar) story elements. Overall, the movie is a "must see".

Avatar was absolutely amazing - truly ground breaking immersive experience. Going to see it again over the holidays with the family. Highly recommended to see it at an Imax theater to get the full 3D experience. If you get motion sickness easily, you might want to take Dramamine before the movie.

From the start it was visually the most stunning thing I have ever seen. You understand why it took him so long to make it once you see it. The story is gripping and compelling and will keep you on the edge of your seat with wall to wall kick butt action. You fall in love with the native people and find yourself questioning your own race. The experince of the IMAX 3D made it the greatest movie I have payed to see in a long time. Everything seemed to be taking place on a large stage live in front of you with rocks and sticks flying directly at your face. I am going to go see it again to soak up the experince as much as possible.

AVATAR pulled me into it's world. I even bought into it's predictable moments and one liners.
My five favorite things about the film:
• the six legged horse
• those luminous, floating jelly fish like creatures
• the Na'vi warrior knife
• Great Leonopteryx
• Stephen Lang
Cameron had to spend 15 years just developing the Na'vi language. Geesh!

Special effects get five stars. The story gets one star. In the first fifteen minutes, you know exactly what will happen. Ridiculous stereotypes for military leaders and corporations. The story gets way too political.
