As others have said, typical story line. The main focus was the action and the CG characters. The 3D makes it worth wild. Must see it in 3D, don't think the regular version will do it justice.

Two Words: Awe Some

This is a visual masterpiece that can only be portrayed in 3D. I had some initial trepidation about going, due to the cheesiness of the 2D commercials and posters, thinking it was going to be just another cartoon. But after seeing it in IMAX, and in 3D, I realize there's just no way to represent it in any other format. The reviewers who take pot shots at what they consider to be a thin plot line are missing the point-this is a visual experience, not a James Joyce novel. See it.

Great Movie -- Disappointing Theatre

This movie is really good. Of course there is the age old "humans destroy planets" theme but other the the subtle brainwashing it's very entertaining. There's a chick flick wrapped into this action movie.

I won't pay the premium for IMAX at this location again though. Being from NJ, I know what a real IMAX theater is. When I entered this theater my first reaction was "Where is the rest of the screen?". Every IMAX I have been to in the past wraps you in the picture. The screen extends to the sides. This is a big screen but it's not a real IMAX . I think non IMAX 3D would be just as impressive and you would save a few bucks.

In all this movie is a huge departure from the norm and is well worth seeing.

The New York Times ended its review by saying that with Avatar, Cameron put the "Wow" back into the movie visual experience.
I totally concur.
You are welcomed into an amazingly beautiful world with such overwhelming flourishes that this very long movie just flies by! Cameron obviously uses his special effects to impact time in our universe!

Our group included two people who had seen this movie the previous day, but not in IMAX, and not in 3D. They both agreed that the 3D and the IMAX screen added a new dimension to the experience, and really made it "come alive". The 3D effects did not include items that rushed out at you, but added a depth to the image that was worthwhile. The story line was v. good, and the action was non-stop. The 3D glasses were comfortable and worked well.

Best CGI I've ever seen

I saw the movie in IMAX 3D. I had never seen an IMAX 3D movie before, and I have to confess I am thoroughly impressed. This is the best computer-generated graphics I have seen in my life, and I have seen many.

The sad part, however, is that the story is not original and it's totally predictable. It's a scripted copy of a very used and tried plot line, with the only change being that it's in an interstellar setting instead of on Earth.

As far as movies go, it's just OK. As far as graphics and technology go, it's leading edge.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the story line is as a few other titles I have seen. The 5 stars goes to the detail in the scenes and characters. A must see in 3D! I wish I could have it at home to watch in 3D a few more times!

Profits vs Respect for nature

The story line was familiar, but don’t the existing forms need to be retold to focus us on the issues of our time? In this story of “subdue the earth” vs. living as caretaker of the earth I came away with the sad recognition that we really are killing our own beautiful planet in the pursuit of profits. How to resolve this clash of values? That is the main question I feel _Avatar_ leaves us with. Director James Cameron, in choosing to represent that humans of 2154 look (and act) just like Americans of 2010, seems to say: “We have met the enemy and he, it turns out, is US(A).” And I can’t disagree.

If I could live in a movie, it would be Avatar.

Obvious moralistic tale about native peoples and ruthless invaders, and the invader who "goes native" a la Dances With Wolves. Still a brilliantly-told story, great acting, utterly gorgeous visuals, and flawless effects. Well worth the extra couple bucks per person for the IMAX 3D.

3D Imax experience-avatar

the 3D imax experience - Absolutly amazing has to be seen to be believed - thought i was part of the movie - as life like as it gets - hope many more movies can be produced like this - also recreated to this format like maybe" Jarasic Park" for example
Avatar also incridbile dazaling awesome blows you away to another world - action packed fast moving - excellent cast - especially Sigourney Weaver's proformance added greatly to the show
She is always terrfic - Because movie is so long and intense an intermission would be a good idea - C 16 NJ should promote there imax theater more - i did not know it exisited until I went on line for Avatar 3D Imax experience

3D IMAX...incredible!

I went in thinking this wouldn't really be my kinf of movie because I'm not into Sci-Fi. Totally wrong, this movie had a great story and the experience in IMAX/3D was mind blowing. 1 friend had to leave due to some motion sickness but the other 9 in the group were in awe after the film was over. I'll probably go see it again because it was so entertaining.

An Epic Experience!

Avatar in IMAX 3D is a must see! Whether you like this kind of story or not, the state-of-the-art technology is something no one should miss. Gone are the days of the 80s 3D with the green/red glasses. This is amazing.
You are practically in the scene. Seeing it with your own eyes, just crisper, sharper, fully immersed.

This is a movie with Special F-X overload. Planets, creatures, plants, floating Mountains, graphic displays, battle scenes, new language, and on, and on, and on. A galactic "Dances With Wolves". This will be the cult "Star Wars" of the new millinium. Don't just see this movie, 3-D IMAX is the only way to experience it. I will see it again and again. Only the colonel's character and cutsey lines were too predictable. The destruction of hometree was too much. Even in our world a industry would not wreck a civilization's capital. Our female Na'Ve should have also learned things from her charge, the disabled marine vet.

Spectacular cinematography

Saw Avatar in 3D Imax twice and on regular screen. Don't waste your money on regular screening. While the story line is a rehashed "Dances with Wolves," it is tolerable made even more so by the technology. I thought I was in the movie--climbing mountains, flying, and falling. The colors and Cameron's imagination run wild. Loved it!

Animation disappeared

I've heard allot about people seeing this show and loving the effects but claiming no plot. There were several plot lines and references to many of society’s current and past challenges and our failed policies and actions but I had to remind myself that this was sci-fi fiction. The animation soon disappeared in the experience and I felt that I was seeing true characters and real experiences with depth and perspective that allowed me to feel the emotions and delve into the action. I would recommend this IMAX 3D experience but be sure that the facility you go to is up to date and has the largest screen with best maintenance of systems. It's only great when to works.

Hats Off to Mr. Cameron. Truly a breakthrough in filmaking technology.
As expected, the movie's special effects, 3D effects and audio were awesome, and such was only made better by the IMAX experience.
The movie was LONG at 2.5 hours - but not too long to sustain our attention. Just dont get the GIANT Coke ;-)
The storyline can be compared to the struggles of any culture under seige from colonialism or similar exploitation.
*** VERY Violent Content ***
I will buy this on BD when available.

Amazing

The plot is derivative of Dune and Tarzan but the characters pull you into the story line nonetheless.

The cinematography is incredible, and I was a production asisstant so I have an eye for this. You must see it in IMAX 3D. I was sitting in the front row and I felt like I was in the film itself. In one harrowing scene near the end I literally felt the terror of being in the midst of a battle.

Remarkable Mr. Cameron.

Just as everyone mentioned, the graphics were great and looked real with 3D glasses, but it gave one a dizzying sensation from time to time which made it difficult to fully appreciate the movie. I would recommend this to a friend, but conditionally.

The story was a 4, the 3D was a 2. The production was creative, the story was predictible with over-the-top stereotypes. The 3D effects where interesting, but the colors where very muted. I would like to see the movie in full color 2D.
