The story line was familiar, but don’t the existing forms need to be retold to focus us on the issues of our time? In this story of “subdue the earth” vs. living as caretaker of the earth I came away with the sad recognition that we really are killing our own beautiful planet in the pursuit of profits. How to resolve this clash of values? That is the main question I feel _Avatar_ leaves us with. Director James Cameron, in choosing to represent that humans of 2154 look (and act) just like Americans of 2010, seems to say: “We have met the enemy and he, it turns out, is US(A).” And I can’t disagree.
