The storyline was predictable and a little on the weak side. And 2hrs and 40 minutes is a bit too much. But, the special effects and action make it worthwhile.

Love over Greed.

First I do have to say yes it does have familiar theme as movies do, what sets this above others is the deep down story line. In today world all the big people think of is money in there pockets and who cares who it hurts or destroys as long as the fat guy gets fatter. Sometimes we must choose what is more important. The effects are great and it is well worth the IMAX experience. You feel as thought you are a part of what is happening there with this...it totally rocks and the story was very very great. The world needs more Jake Sullys and we wouldn't have the stuff we have going on now. My heart goes out to the NA' VI for the love of the planet and sacrifice to keep it, we have forgotten...thanks James Cameron for giving that back to us.

Incredible world building/story telling

This film is a true exercise of the imagination artistically and technically. The story is a remastered motif of the woodland native savages vs. the civilized industrial society; while a common one, it is masterfully retold to fit the form and shape of this possible future.

The CGI is incredible, particularly in IMAX 3D; the actors fit right into their roles, the dialogue is simple enough not to distract but not so simple that it is stupid, and the flow of the whole film in every aspect is natural and easy to follow.

A wonderful film for Sci Fi fans and the average movie goer. Must see (especially in IMAX 3D).

Lots of fun!!! Do not go with expectations of finding deeper meaning or great insights....just go for the ride. Technical effects are awesome. I have seen the movie twice and recommend 3D Imax over 3D regular size screen. Glasses take a little getting used to...but I had ashes falling in my face by end of movie. It is a long movie...but I was wrapped in Pandora's world from beginning to end. Any movie fan should not miss this one in the theaters.

I am not much of a movie person but this a must see movie. I saw it IMAX 3D and graphics are spectacular. From the moment the movie starts to the very last minute it captivates you and makes you forget of what is aorund you. I can honestly say this is the best movie I have ever seen :)

This movie truly captivated me. In the beginning I was kind of bothered because i was expecting more with the "imax experience" (which is just a slighty bigger screen and its louder) personally i think that it would be a awesome experience is they had it on omnitheatre (dome screen). Any who I soon got affixiated and could no longer pay attention to anything else except this amazing movie. I feel so sorry for the people who are so shallow and simple minded who can't let go of the political views of this movie and just accept that its a wonderful masterpiece that tells a beautiful story. if you want to see an passionate movie that is rivetingly beautiful this is the one to watch.

Great Movie 3D-OK

I saw this in IMAX 3-D, and for my first 3-D movie it was really cool. The movie itself was excellent, the 2:40 flew by. I could have watched for another 30 minutes easy and not been bored. I cant wait for Avatar 2 "Rise of the Smurfs" The graphics were great. It was like watching a GIANT HD movie. The 3D Effects were just OK. The words jumped off the screen during the dialogue, but there were a few times during the movie I took off the glasses to see if there was any differencebecause I didn't notice any 3D going on. Avatar will probably be the first 3D that the Masses will see, and is going to set the stage for future movies. I thought the Preview for HUBBLE in 3D was way cooler than any of the 3D effects in Avatar.

IMAX 3D is an experience, not just a viewing!

Though the morality tale and metaphors are not new, the creative uses of science fiction and special effects deserve praise. The difference between the 3D and the IMAX 3D is significant: I saw the "plain" 3D first, then the IMAX 3D. The IMAX version of the 3D is noticeably more engaging, vivid and absorbing; the enhanced sound of the IMAX contributes to making this an experience, rather than just a viewing, and well worth the extra effort and ticket price.

Absolutely Beautiful!

I saw the movie in 3D IMAX, and was completely blown away by it. The story is a bit cliche'd: humans are the bad guys exploiting an indigenous population for their resources with some love interest thrown in. We've all seen that before, but when set in such an immersive and beautiful world, it becomes compelling again in a new way. But the real star is the visual effects that completely immerse you in a totally alien world, so different from what we're accustomed to that it inspires complete awe and delight. I honestly felt I was stoned the whole time, but I wasn't; not a bit, and that's saying something. The 10-foot tall blue chick was completely hot, too.

Avatar MAX in 3D was great- for me at least! I was with a friend who had to leave because she got so sick from the 3D. It was nice htough for this movie, you could take your 3D glassess off, and the picture wasn't very distorted. NOt like the normal 3D movies I've seen- there is sort of a blurry double picture. She got sick anyway, but the picture was easier to watch for those who do get a little motion sick from time to time!

Best Viewed with an Open Mind

While this film is visually stunning and thoroughly spectacular when viewed in IMAX 3D, I strongly recommend that you look beyond the glitz into the true story. Yes, you can leave this film with ideas of political motivations; liberal ideals; them vs. us; or you can synthesize all of those themes into a coherent, cognizant and amazingly realistic tale about the attempted obliteration of a species to procure something that would be readily available, through cooperation. Great action sequences abound, and with the 3D imagery, you have an even more powerful sense of "being there." Don't try to find the hidden agendas of Hollywood or physical or scientifically incorrect technicalities...it's entertainment! Enjoy it as such!

Great Fun

The plot is predictable, but good vs evil is always satisfying, especially when good wins. The movie is breathtaking and fun and beautiful and creative. Sigourney Weaver is - as always - fantastic. The battle seasons border or R violence, so I'd be cautious about young children.

I would like to have been able to review this film in IMAX as we bought tickets for the IMAX 3D. However as luck would have it the projector broke and we were moved to a "normal" 3D showing. This movie was really good and visually amazing!! It is kinda like "Dances with wolves" but in space! By that I mean Kevin costner friended the indians and switched sides!!

Avatar manages to move 3D into the future. The effects are amazing yet they do not overshadow the story. There is no sense that the creatures/aliens in the movie are being generated by any type of special effects process; they are real & the audience inhabits the world of the movie. The story is simple but effective.

A great story and imagination that flows in a way to keep you interested at every moment of the movie and before you know it, you have spent 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Special effects in 3D IMAX were great. I think Cameron was going for this generations Star Wars experience...something never experienced before. He got it and to appreciate it; I recommend seeing it in IMAX 3D. There has been criticism of dialog and predictability; however, Star Wars was not noted for that either. It was perfect escape movie...to a world that was amazing and visually stunning.

We took 13 year old son and 9 year old daughter who loved it.

There were a few intense scenes that I wasn't sure daughter would enjoy but she had no problem with them.

Some hard langauge was used; mainly (S-word).

Not meant to be seen in 2D!!!

It is truly something when you see a movie that is a technological masterpiece and halfway through you are more involved with the story than anything else. The 3D brings everything to life, and makes the characters seem so real it is remarkable. I've seen a few 3D movies before Avatar, and none were able to get 3D feeling realistic, but Avatar offers depth to the entire world. You begin to forget that what you're seeing is an effect and you are drawn into Pandora, caring more about the characters and the events than you would in a typical movie. 2D is to blame for the poor reviews, since it is the fact these people and creatures seem to take up real space in front of you, and not so much the colors and detail.

Special effects make up for formulaic storyline

Speaking from a storyline perspective, 'Avatar" was another not-so-subtle jab at the evils of capitalism and colonialism, nostalgically praising a "more simple time." Not to say that that the story wasn't enjoyable despite that fact, as the acting and scene transitions were clearly well done, but it was predictable.

What accentuates the story of course, is the amazing special effects. Never has a director ever made it so believable that you, the audience, are in another world.

Brilliant movie with breathtaking effects. This is definitely a landmark movie in terms of movie technology and recommend you see it at an IMAX theater in 3D.
Although lead actor, Sam Worthington, was weak, the rest of the cast and the effects far outweighed this .
One of the best movies I have seen for a long time and I will go and see it again.

Solid Entertaining Flick

I highly recommend the 3-D viewing as it really helps to immerse you into the movie. My overall impression was that if you're looking for an exciting action packed few hours with some spectacular visuals, then you can't go wrong with Avatar. However, there was some depth I felt was missing from the film. Many of the main characters lacked a sense of completeness and I felt like they could have been fleshed out a little more. That being said, I do think the lack of character development was more than made up by the character of the environment. The lush forest with its unique creatures was a feast for the eyes and the many action sequences did keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the long running time.
