....about one of the more outrageous con men ever. I like movies that make me think, make me a bit uncomfortable and/or surprise the heck out of me. "I Love You Phillip Morris" succeeds in all of these attributes. Carrey and McGregor, in the lead roles, are about as perfect as you can get. The story is fascinating (hard to believe it is a true story). I'm sure the fact that the characters are gay men will turn away many potential movie goers - and that's a shame. True that some of the more sexually explicit scenes were likely unnecessary ... but this is a captivating character study that most adults should enjoy. It's good to see Jim Carrey pushing boundaries, stretching his acting chops and taking some risks. I respect him for it and he is very talented. Hope he keeps trying to do unusual roles. No doubt they will not be everybody's cup of tea .... but I, for one, will enjoy his journey.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I'm surprised I'm the first person to mention the comparison...like the Spielberg/DiCaprio classic, this is the true story of a con man who, for the better part of his life, is contantly putting one over on "The Man," & excecuting his ruses/charades in ways you never see coming. Does this make him a character we can be sympathetic with? The mixed reviews I've read so far can answer that question. (Note to reviewer AntRalphy: Dude, I don't know what movie YOU were watching, but to say there's no spark between Carrey's & MacGregor's characters proves you're either clueless, were falling asleep during the film, or are homophobic. Oh, and do a spell check next time you post a review ["STORT" "is was"].) (And to the 1-star who got up & walked out--what did you expect, Grandma? If you don't know the overall content of a film before you go see it, then stay the hell away from it!)
As one other reviewer also stated, the fact that Carrey was cast in the lead role may cause some potential viewers to shy away from this film. That would be sad because, IMHO, Jim has shown his acting chops and proven that he's more than just an on-screen nutbar--e.g., ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE, and what I believe to be an unfairly-overlooked film, THE MAJESTIC. In all fairness, though, I would say MacGregor is the star who truly shines here--this is one of his finest acting jobs, giving him ample room to show a full spectrum of emotions we rarely see from him. The relationship between the two is very well-acted & believable.
Another reviewer is also spot-on when saying that it's potentially confusing as to whether this film could/should be labelled as a comedy. There are definitely a few moments of Carrey's trademark schtick we're all familiar with, but they're kept to a minimum and utilized to good effect in the telling of the story. The film is actually a dramedy, going from moments of side-splitting humor to dark, heavy drama.
My friend and I both enjoyed this movie immensely and believe that fans of Jim Carrey & Ewan MacGregor will, too. It's a sad-but-funny retelling of the story of a man out of touch with realistic goals in life and finding out the hard way that karma can, indeed, be a cruel taskmaster. How you relate to such a bittersweet tale is entirely up to you.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Nothing to do with tobacco. Jim Carrey does a jump the shark . Based on a true story, he plays a married cop who as a child learns he was adopted, finds his birth mother, is rejected again and then decides to come out of the closet as a flamboyant gay con man. Its not Ace Ventura for sure so keep the kids home because there's more sex here than in all of Brokeback Mountain, but without the heart. The film never really finds itself. Its not a comedy, nor a drama.
Carrey needs money to support his new found lavish life style. He pretends to be a lawyer, judge, CFO, and even a dying AIDS patient. It is fascinating, but it never really connects in a way that makes you care. Much of the story takes place in prison, with more attempts to break out than are seen in "The Great Escape". This is probably the best part of the movie, viewing the ingenuity of this man. Yet in the end, its a tragedy to see how someone with this much talent has wasted his life and some of yours.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor are brilliant.
Creative and entertaining cons meet one of the most warm and touching on screen romances I have seen recently.
So many action and crime movies fail to make the romance relevant to the story, but here, the romance is the motivation for the story. It works surprisingly well.

There were some cute moments in the movie, and the actors had great chemistry, but fundamentally this was a biopic of a very sad character who had some compulsion to keep messing up his life and landing in jail.

I have not yet seen this film. However, the review given by nyc123 is so typical of self-absorbed gay men or straight yuppies of today. You are nothing but conventional and superficial. Your whole identitiy is based on purchasing designer brands and worrying about your looks.
The biggest insult you are capable of giving someone is that he or she is fat. If you are gay, then fat and heterosexual is your most creative combo. What will you do when you are no longer young or have the money to run to your overpriced gym everyday?
Your comments infer that fat people are stupid and incapable of intellectual sophistication. You are the one who reveals your lack of these qualities by your comments.
I am a highly insightful, creative and intelligent fat lesbian.

The story was quite an amazing and interesting one revolving around Jim Carrey as a gay scam artist and Ewen McGregor as his overly trusting boyfriend. However, both actors portrayed their roles as somewhat offensive gay steretypes and there was no spark of chemistry between them. Jim Carrey was actually rather irritating. The crux of the film's problem was that is was unclear whether it was a drama, comedy or farce and ended up being none of them.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This is a really funny and unpredictable movie which truly surprises all along. Is there an audience? The first night it opened the theatre was only half-full although the audience seemed to like it. It's possibly too arty and edgy(and gay) for mainstream comedy fans but for art cinema fans the presence of Carrey might keep them away. What's great is that the gay main character is not a swish and not tragic either but a charismatic fun rogue who is also involved in a moving love story. In other words, the kind of character who is usually heterosexual. This is in many ways a truly progressive film. Plus it's the funniest film I've seen this year.

Great, smart, fun, over-the-top love story. Can't believe it even got made in this homophobic, gay hating/gay negative time of Adam Sandler,Louis C.K. Comedy Central, SNL,Tea Party, etc.
The audience I saw it with was a bunch of your usual fat straight people that were all appalled at the film -of course! They booed at the end.
Why'd they stay through it?

The basic story was a good one but the director was too heavy handed with the gay aspect of the film. I tried to think about how it would have been presented if the characters were straight. If it was written in a straight format I would think of it as a decent movie but too sappy.
