I am a lover of all things Meryl and all things Julia, and yet this movie disappointed. The sets and costumes are well done, the effect of making the average-sized Streep look Amazonian is pulled off, and the characterization is often funny, charming and even touching. Yet the attempt to portray such an idiosyncractic person goes too many times over the top into a realm uncomfortably and uncannily comparable to the Dan Ackroyd impersonation, a clip of which is unfortunately included. While not quite a one-dimensional portrayal, the limitations do render the final action of Childs in reference to the Julie character inexplicable and uncharacteristically cruel.

If anything, this film rekindles ones desire to be adept in the kitchen. It is such a tribute to Julia Child and the individual who decided to take a journey of culinary love with her via her book. This movie was excellent and uplifting!

I really enjoyed the movie. The experience reminded me of the seeing "The Queen", in that it was that increasingly rare experience, an "adult" film. There was wit, beauty, plot, and even complexity (is it a film about food, finding one's passion, marriage, or all of the above?) The theater was quite full and had the old fashioned feel of the days when adults actually went out on a Saturday to see a movie. As the reviewers have said, the Julia part of the movie is stronger than the Julie part, but the the latter was never worse than pleasant, and often added to the film. Go see it, it's a delight.

Watching Julie and Julia is tantamount to seeing Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" tossed in a bonfire. I was insulted on a very deep level by the implications of the film for modern womanhood. The female characters in the film are either soulless career women, or are, hyperemotional melt-down prone casualties of an age which does not allow women to do what they really need to be doing--i.e. cooking meals for their, sometimes henpecked bread-winning and rational husbands. They are unfulfilled by their ventures into the world of men, and need to be brought back to a happier, post WWII era. They need to be encouraged by their husbands to take up "hobbies" that sometimes result in profitable ventures, as Julia Child's ventures did.

Great movie for a pleasant evening out. Meryl Streep's voice got a little annoying by the end of the movie and the constant light tone of her character belied some of the heart ache i.e. her husband being investigated by the Mc Carthy group. I don't think this will garner any awards, but it is a fun movie. You leave the theater feeling good about the world!

This movie is a combinaion of two books, My Life in France by Julia Child and Julie and Julia, the blog that became a book by Julie Powell. It is a story of two women struggling to find themselves in new circumstances, which they do through food. The acting is superb - Meryl Streep beccomes Julia Child for this movie and there were points where I thought the great lady herself was on the screen. The cinematography and research were very well done. There were also multiple scenes of great humor - my favorite being the onion scene. Would absolutely recommend to anyone.

i loved this movie so much i saw it twice in one week. no one but meryl streep could have pulled off such a perfect julia child impersonation. a perfect love story, very funny. don't be afraid to take the seniors in your family, my mom loved it.
