The movie was true to the book and the acting was terrific. Even for us moms who went along with our kids, having not read the books, the movie was easy to follow and very entertaining.

I was so disappointed with the adaptation of HP and the Half Blood Prince, so I was a bit worried at how they would adapt the final book. All I have to say is Bravo!
I really enjoyed the first part of Deathly Hallows. They embraced all of the emotional aspects of the first half of the book. Added a few scenes not in the book, but kept important aspects of the book. Also, I think the "cut off" to end part one was the perfect place.
For those who have read the books, you will understand all of the "moving" and "camping." For those who have not read the book it can be a bit confusing. My husband did not read the books, but he enjoyed the movie a great deal as well.
All in all, I think they did a great job on adapting the first part of Deathly Hallows. I am looking forward to the finale in the summer.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

They're grown up now and this film makes it clear they didn't lose any brain cells along the way. Is it dark? Yes. How could it be any other way? The world they love is teetering on total catastrophe. Beautifully and tightly directed, edited and scored, this movie is a delight. I can't wait to see the next one.

Great action, but good tension building as well. It seemed like the director turned to art house style in the middle which I really liked. It is dark, sexual, and foreboding - pushes the PG -13 rating a little bit which is good. FAR superior to the last movie.

Loved this movie! Incredibly true to the book and has the best portrayal of Hermione ever. She's strong and smart and doesn't break down crying like she has in some of the other movies (and not the books.) Wonderful imagery and the best acting so far out of all the movies.

I enjoyed the first two HP movies but felt like the third and fourth were duds. The newest HP is about the same quality as the last two movies.
There is a lot of camping in the woods, but that is what the book is about! They seemed to add drama where none was located in the book to keep the movie audience interested which is understandable.
All around good, could have been better if they made it a full three hour movie. I'm thinking "Gone with the Wind" length, just to get the best parts of the story in.

Great movie, very faithful to the book. I suggest re-reading Deathly Hallows before seeing the movie, but as long as you've read the books the movie will make sense.
As all the professional reviews have said, if you are new to HP this is not the time to jump in. Also, if you are one of those people who has just seen the movies and hasn't read any of the books, go read the books first. Several of the previous movies have left out plot details essential to the final chapters of HP, and you will end up confused and complaining that you don't get the movie.

This film was right on with the book, nothing taken out as some of the previous movies had done for time purposes. There is a real sense of danger, I had to leave at one point b/c I got so scared! I will be seeing it again in the theaters in a couple weeks with my little brother. A lot of time running away in the woods, but it is needed, since it is building on future events as they happen. Very emotional film this time. Again, emotion is needed for desired effect as well. VERY WELL DONE! Can't believe I have to wait for PART 2!

This film was not up to par with the previous ones. It dragged on for most of the time. Yes, the book had some slow spots in the first half but the film did not have to dwell on that! I was bored and was actually waiting for the end of the movie so I could get some fresh air and wake up! Sorry, but this one was very average.

The movie was well done, with many emotions employed on screen throughout the movie and it followed like the book, with much emotion but not much action. The first part of Deathly Hallows was all about setting up the plot of the movies and therefore there isn't too much actually happening except understanding what is going on. You leave the movie theater unsatisfied but that is due to the fact that every other Harry Potter has a big finish and wrap up and seeing how this is part one, it does not follow suit with a big finish and wrap up to what the three are after. All in all though it was well done and I enjoyed watching it.

Starts to get good, then the credits roll. Great marketing strategy, and I'm certainly glad they didn't butcher the story and cram it all in to two hours, but still, you can't help but feel cheated that you have to wait a year to see the second half. That's a freakin' long intermission.

If you're an HP fan who has read the books and has been disappointed in some of the film versions (most notably HBP), then rest assured that DHp1 delivers. While it does still vary some from the written text, it does not skimp on the character development and the often glossed-over internal conflict that's usually left out of film versions. It fluctuates beautifully between laughter and despair.
Also, the "kids" have definitely grown up, and it's extremely satisfying to see the chapters of the text played out on the big screen.
That said, be forewarned of three things:
1. Because of the attention paid to the finer details of the characters' emotional lives, much of this film is not "action", per se, but rather dialogue and introspection.
2. If you haven't read the book, bring along someone who has. Otherwise it might be confusing.
3. If you're thinking of bringing your kids, know that some parts of the film are exceedingly sad, and others are quite violent. There are also heavy poltical overtones (especially remisiniscent of WWII and the propoganda included therein) that most kids will completely miss. If your son or daughter is sensitive or easily disturbed by graphic images - even if they've read the book, as the visual imagery in film can really hit hard - you may want to rethink bringing them.
Enjoy!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is simply outstanding. The writers and producers made the correct decision in breaking the book into two parts. The story is so complex and complicated that trying to cram it all into one movie would not have done it justice. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have matured into incredible young actors. The range and depth of emotion they show in this sometimes sad and gut wrenching movie is amazing. If you are a Potter fan you will not be disappointed.

If you're a fan of the series, you need no introduction, you need to go see this immediately. If you're new to the whole Harry Potter phenomena, this is NOT the place to start: instead go see the other films in order, as there is not one bit of development on the characters--it is assumed you know who they are and already have a vested interest in them...which makes sense becuase, after all, this is the 7th movie in the series.
Harry and friends are pitted in their ultimate battle against time in this race to destroy all the items that keep Voldemort alive, This is the beginning, it is culminated in the next movie, where much will be explained, so as I said, don't expect much explanation in this installment.
Is it good? Yes. Should you see it? Yes. Is it as magical as the earlier installments? Not really...yet.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
