I am always a critic of movies based on books because they leave too much stuff out for the viewer to fully understand what is going on.
Here they have the chance to recify that situation by splitting it into two movies. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
Having had read the book long ago, I could not remember much of it in going to the movie. As it turns out, reading the book was much more important in this one than any of the others. The simple truth is "it is much harder to carry a story through dialogue than it is through prose".
If the only way to carry a magical story is through black & white photography then maybe they succeeded, but to me the whole thing was dull.
We've become a society that needs to be entertained because we've lost our imagination & the ability to entertain ourselves. Read the book; skip the movie.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

The director and producer got this one right. They pretty much stuck with the book. I enjoyed this first movie (#7 Part 1) and am looking forward to the end movie (#7 Part2). The darkness of the book came through with the movie.

Worth waiting for ... although I'd have loved to see the entire movie. But it'll be fun waiting til July to see the rest of it.
Close to the book, however they left a lot of stuff out, which is unfortunate because I felt those details were important.
I'm sad to see this story coming to an end!

It was refreshing that the producer actually followed the storyline for a change. The fact that most of the movie is filmed in dark grays and blacks is very appropriate given that this is the darkest book of the series. It magnifies the isolation that Harry, Hermione, and Ron are experiencing at this point in the saga, such that a true Harry Potter fan would come to expect.
It didn't bother me that there was a general lack of whimsical magic in this film as was in the previous films because this film is about Harry finally realizing who he is and what he is supposed to do. It's about finding and destroying the horcruxes and ultimately Voldemort, and survival. It is not about the school-aged lighting spells, and elementary wand work as was used in the Hogwarts scenes. They are not in Hogwarts, and they are no longer children.
I am anxiously looking forward to the final film to see how it changes or stays the same from the current film. I hope part two stays true to the book as part one does.
Great Job WB.

Great Harry Potter movie. Only thing I would change is "love" scene between Harry and Hermione when Ron destroys the locket. Why did they have to be naked? Would've been just as effective if they'd had their clothes on. Also, this would be a difficult movie for those who have not read the books nor seen the other movies as they would not understand a lot of what was going on. But that's their loss.

This movie didn't make me angry. It was very close to the book; at least the visions I saw when reading it. No extravagant scenes that were not in the book, and it followed the story line to a T. As a Harry Potter fan that has read every book at least 4 times, I appreciate that they have fianally stuck to the story line and made a movie worth seeing more than once.

I've read the books and listened to them on audio books more than once. This is the best realization of the books yet. Of course a huge part of it is because they have 5 hours to tell the story instead of 2.5. The film is able to illustrate the themes in greater detail-- ideas about trust, friendship, family solidarity, growing up, evil, questioning evil, etc. The film adds a couple of (small) new things that are delightful and help the film be a better adaptation. The choices that have been made about what to leave out, what to alter, and how to segue between each segment are just exquisite. As the movie ended I was on a natural high, it had so transported me. The intense and scary parts are well supported so a (sensitive) person can really let go into the film. So worthwhile. A masterpiece.

The book was to long to even make in to two movies. Key pieces are being left out and characters deaths are being changed.
Over all it was good, but like any movie when it does not wrapped up like Kill Bill 1 or Star Wars (Empire strikes back) in the first part it leaves you a little unsatisfied. But it still keeping on track with the story line.
Cannot wait till part 2.

This movie reportedly cost over $150 million dollars but I’m at a loss as to what that could have been spent on. There’s almost no soundtrack to speak of, the cinematography is practically non-existent, just various shades of grey, but the worst part is Yates clearly doesn’t like magic as this movie has none. Yates’ idea of Wizarding fights is showing dark puffs of smoke all over the place.
The spell work is non-existent just people flicking their arms and things exploding – usually little sparks and glass breaking. Again, I ask, where’s the magic? I want to go back to the first two movies where we saw jets of light and have spells show different effects beyond someone just falling down as if punched. Heck even in the beginning when Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) kills someone we barely see the sickly green death curse. Did I mention this movie cost over $150 MILLION?? Where was that money spent? Craft services?
I have grave concerns about the final battle in Part Two, Yates doesn’t care about magic, wizard duels, clearly doesn’t like using SFX, so how is he going to have a 1 1/2 hour final magical battle?
The one thing I’m thankful for is they ran out of time on post converting this movie to 3D. It would have been absolutely horrible, there is NOTHING, not one scene or moment in that would have looked good or even been worth watching in 3D. Unless you think watching bland, desolate landscapes in 3D would have been awesome.
The Deathly Hallows is a very big and dense book, where not much happens during the first half of the book, so the decision to split this movie in two was an interesting one. I’m actually glad they cut most of the stuff regarding Dumbledore’s book in the movie, but it felt weird because they show Gellert Grindelwald taking the Elder Wand but the movie never explains the significance of that moment or his connection to Dumbledore or even who this character is.
Since the first part was 2 1/2 hours they clearly had time to spend 10 minutes showing the relationship between young Dumbledore and young Grindelwald. So yes, I just contradicted myself, by leaving out the Dumbledore stuff in the movie, it shows how important it actually was to the overall story.
This is my main problem with Yates and the last three HP movies, they introduce characters and concepts that have major story implications but never follow through or bother to explain so it always feels like you have to have read the books to really understand the significance of these moments. At the end when nothing is followed through on it ends up feeling like half hearted fan service.
For example they bring Kreacher back, so as a fan of the books, I couldn’t wait for them to do his story and show how Voldemort lost his first Horcruex and watch his complete character transformation. They finally introduce Bill Weasley and he’s on screen for less than 30 seconds just to mention he got into a fight with Greyback – again, no background or anything (hopefully we’ll get more in part two, but somehow I doubt it).
The Burrow was burned down in the last movie, now it’s back and no explanation of how this happened. When Ron returns they don’t bother to explain that using Voldemort’s name brings snatchers to your door, etc.
Another example of this and major failing is the idea that Yates had TWO very long movies to work with (HBP and DH1), but NEVER bothers to properly explain how Voldemort chose his Horcruex’s and the significance to Wizarding History each one contains. It’s NEVER mentioned, they NEVER once act like they KNOW what the Horcruex’s are LIKELY to be.
Would it have killed him to have one scene where we find out that Voldemort used the last known objects of the founders of the school as the containers of his soul bits. These are not some random trinkets he picked up at a thrift store.
It goes to one of Voldemort’s central character traits and it shows that the trio actually has some idea of what they are at least looking for. Yate’s clearly doesn’t care about what they are hunting, only that they are searching for these objects.
I’m going to close now because the longer this review goes, the more and more I hate the film.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I do believe I would have sat through both parts if they had been presented back-to-back. Really, it is refreshing to see a rich story like this get the full treatment it deserves -- unlike Order of the Phoenix, which felt a bit condensed. The young actors have come to inhabit the characters JKR created and overall, the story was well paced and finished at the appropriate place (i.e. leaving the audience wanting more). Kudos to the cast and crew, and of course to Ms Rowling and her wonderful imagination. Can't wait to see part 2. In the mean time, I believe I'll go catch part 1 again...

I must disagree with the reviews that I read so far. I was extremely disappointed with part 1 of the Deathly Hallows. I have read all the books and own all the movies, and this one has been my least favorite. It seems as though the last 3 movies have not been as good as the first four. I know that the books are extremely long, and you can't put everything in the movie. I felt like some key parts from the book were left out and the movie was pretty boring with no action. I found this werid, seeing as though I have been waiting for months to see the movie and the book wasn't boring at all!

First of all, let me say I am a "Harry Potter" fan however it was very hard for me to get through this movie. I fell asleep a couple of times and I would suggest to read the book rather than see this movie. I would not see it again but I will watch all the previous films in a heartbeat. From what I hear, Part 2 will be much better than this movie (segment). I can't wait for Part 2. I'm still a fan, just not happy with this Harry Potter film.

Making up for the piece of crap that was 'Half-Blood Prince,' the 7th installment of the Harry Potter series started a little shaky but improved quickly.
I believe the shaky start was, mostly, due to the problems they gave themselves by not sticking closely enough to the book with #6, and they addressed some of those issues very well.
The appearance of ALL CAPS HARRY was actually handled very well- enough to get the point across, and not enough to set my teeth on edge.
The acting was what you'd expect from a team who've done this for 7 movies so far, and each of the main three did very well.
This is a slow movie, until the end. Just like the book. Make no mistake, this is keeping much more in the spirit of the book than did HBP, which means the first installment will be fairly slow. You have been warned.
Solid A.

J K Rowling did a masterful job of bringing all the little things from the other books to a final conclusion in The Deathly Hallows. The movie producers could easily have put more of these items into Part One. Other than that the movie was great and I will see it quite a few more times.
