I am a big Harry Potter fan, and I have read all of the books, although I have a terrible memory so the movie reminded me of a lot of things.
I have an 8 year old boy who keeps begging me to let him read past book 4 of the Harry Potter series. So far, I have said he needs to wait until he's older. Watching this movie made me feel more secure in that decision. It is extremely well done, and very true to the book, but it has some very terrifying moments and an overall mature theme. Would he have nightmares about the snake attack? Maybe. Would he have nightmares about torture and killing? Maybe. But even more importantly... is he emotionally mature enough to wrap his head around the nazi-themed stuff? The concept of fear of "the other" and bigotry and hatred ripping apart families and governments? These are all things he will learn about in time, but I feel like letting him be an innocent kid for a little while longer is the best plan.
That said, I LOVED this movie. My husband liked it, but had no idea what was going on because he had only seen the first 3 movies and hadn't read any of the books.
Overall, I would say that this movie is excellent for adults and older children who can grasp the complex subject matter. It's excellent for people who know the story well and have read all of the books, or at least seen all of the movies leading up to this one. Anyone else will be confused.
The cinematography was STUNNING, and the acting was superb. I will absolutely see it again in the theater. This was by far the best Harry Potter movie so far, and probably one of the best films of the year.

I took my daughter and four friends for her birthday and I must say that it was a huge hit!! We all loved it....and most surprising was that as "dark" as the movie is we found ourselves laughing alot!!! GREAT FILM!!!

Yes, I am a Harry Potter Fan; but just because i consider myself one doesn't mean my review does not count. Since I am such a fan of the books I am usually a very harsh critic of the movies. HP7 Part One is so far the best adaptation of the books and a fantastic film. The choices made by the writers, directors, and cast are all well made and understandable. Everybody should see this movie, even if it is just for the amazing performances by a seriously talented cast!

Great movie. Kept it close to the book although some exceptions. Some scary and intense parts. Took a 10 year old and they liked it but were scared. Can't wait for Part 2!!!!

truly enjoyed the movie but couldn't help but see that it would be confusing to those who have not read the book. my granddaughter sat by me and i had to explain many things to her because she had not read it. it is definitely an 'insiders' movie...loved it!

HP Part VII was undoubtedly the darkest yet. Filmed in a more gritty documentary style, the film captures the teenage angst of the trio combined with the increasingly dark forces of Valdemort and his evil accomplices, some of whom grapple with how far they are truly willing to go for the Dark Lord. Although the movie runs a little long, if you are a Potter fan, this one is definitely worth your time. It will be a long wait 'til next summer for Part Two.

According to my 17-year old grandson and his girlfriend, this movie was surprising boring. They left out early because the audience was either sleeping or chatting during most of the movie. When asked what they thought.... their words were "either we missed something during the viewing or it was just one of the most boring of the lot and that I wasted my money since it was my treat.

Overall, this movie was one of the better Potter films. But in some places, things that were important did not happen. I was a little disappointed, because I had assumed that because the movie is in two parts and was 2 hours and 30 minutes long that all of the important elements would be in it. Need I remind you Potter fans of the 4th movie containing not even a whiff of house elves or S.P.E.W.?

I thought this movie measured up well to the first 2/3 of the novel. I thought the tone of the movie was set well, and the small bits of humor were very well timed. I was thrilled they finally brought Dobby back after writing him out of the last 3 movies.If your a book fan first you might not be too happy about some of the things they left out, but i think movie only fans, like my wife, will really enjoy this last installment.

Harry Ron and Hermione are no longer at Hogwarts, but out in the cruel dark world. This movie has more intense violence and drama than earlier Harry Potter films, so not a good choice for young children. The cinematography are music are exceptional.

As a fans of the books, I was slightly disappointed with a few of the changes and omissions, butr I overall was very pleased.
If anything, the movie does a better job portraying the nuances of Hermione than the books.
The table is set for the last movie. Expect to see lots of Snape next year.

I hope and pray that releasing movies in two parts does not become a trend. The character interaction is great, but perhaps a little bit drawn out. Unfortunately, just when you are getting into the emotion of the movie, you are going to have to wait seven months to regain that feeling.

As a fan of the entire series, this movie does all the previous installments justice. In fact, I'd say it exceded many of the earlier movies. It stuck pretty closely to the novel, so nothing truely important was left out.
This movie pulled at your heart-strings and made you laugh more than ever before. The action will have you at the edge of your seat and holding your breath.
If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series, this is a must see.
If you aren't a fan of the Harry Potter series, it is a great movie regardless, so it would be worth your while.

I thought the movie was every bit as good as expected, well made, well executed, great special effects and it stuck to the storyline. I would have rather had one movie for the entire book and it would have been a lot more exciting and edge of your seat action but that just means the next movie will be action packed. Parts of the movie could have been more gripping and dramatic, like the last movie, in particular the Dumbledore scene, it was a little lacking in emotional impact. But great overall, cant wait for the next, and last :(, installment!

It had me sitting at the edge of my seat the whole time. I didn't want it to end although I can't imagine sitting through a six hour movie. Can't wait till next year.

I love this series. Have all the DVDs. Have not read the books as I learned long ago things get changed & sometimes are very disappointing. Not sure I would take a child under 9, some parts might be unsettling to younger children. But this movie is awesome, can't wait for part 2!

I really enjoyed this movie. I freely admit that sections of the movie are slow but they are consistent with the book and are necessary for building the story in preparation for Part 2. Given the darkness of the subject matter, I would not recommend that small children see it. The book is the same way and the movie is consistent with it.
