...and this has about the same energy. Recommend to a friend? Yes. A GIRL friend! The scenes are great, because the backdrop we're led to believe is a Greek island (don't know if they actually filmed in a real one). It's beautiful there. Poor Pierce can't sing, but he's well edited/rehearsed, whatever. I'm a guy, and I'm not kidding you when I say I could count the number of men in the large theatre on ONE hand! Please don't revoke my man card... It was fun and well-edited, fast without being manic, Meryl Streep is great and doesn't overplay the role. LOVED Julie Walters, her character was played well!!! Loved seeing the cameos (though fast) by Benny and Bjorn of the original ABBA, but most people younger than me wouldn't have a clue who they were! There are many laugh-out-loud scenes, and it was fun. It was just OK for me though. Enjoy!

OMG! This movie was sooo hillarious! I and everyone in the theatre was lol so many times! There were some cases of BAD singing, but that was usually in light of events in the film. Go see it!

The setting is gorgeous and the songs are wonderful..........but the friends of Streep are too old and very unappealing. Streep is almost too old for the part, but her voice is nice and she has lots of energy. Brosnan has an awful singing voice; all of the men are appropriate because men can father a child at almost any age! The musical numbers are fun. Did not like the new songs added; they did not seem necessary, especially with Brosnan singing one of them! Not nearly as good as the play.

As an avid fan of the play, I was anxiously awaiting the movie. The Greek Islands look fake they are so beautiful! Sophie is perfectly cast and Meryl Streep sings ABBA surprisingly well. I had a little "cringe" when Pierce Brosnan sang, but you can't help but like him. If you're a fan of the play, defiinitely check it out. (And be sure to stay through the credits so you can see all the Spandex glory while listening to the "encore" just like in the play).

My wife and I wanted to see this movie, because we like ABBA's music. We were over taking with the laughter and fun that this movie brings out in you. The acting, dancing and music was superb. There were women of all ages dancing and singing in the aisles of the theater. Guys...taking your loved one to see this, might be the best thing to share an experience you both will never forget. I had seen Mama Mia in NYC, but the play...I loved it SO much and was dancing in the aisles. The music was fabulous! When I found out that the movie was nearby, I had my daughter get tickets on line and we got there an hour early, and the theatre was already jammed. The movie was even better, Pierce Brosnan was super, and Meryl Streep was awsome. I was very thrilled with the movie AND the play, and would still go again.

Great job taking this to the big screen! I don't want to hear Pierce Brosnan sing again, but his acting was great and his character lovable so its forgivable. It was such a fun movie, people in the theater were laughing out loud and clapping and singing along. GREAT movie experience!

Yay! At the movie's end, the whole theater broke into cheers and applause. I loved every minute of it. Although musicals are fun--they can sometimes drag during the umpteenth song--not so with our Mamma Mia. Of course Meryl elected to do what we already know she does best, ACT--but honestly, who expected her to ACT while she sang? Not me. What a grand and delightful surprise. Her character's angst, joy, anger, and trepidation were all clearly defined during the songs; and not just with the words--oh no--it was HER heart that we saw. Of course no one expected 007 to sing either, and surely he won't be on American Idol anytime soon--but who cares? He was charming and bold, and if in my own life, my babe sang to me--I wouldn't give a rip about the quality of his voice--I'd be blown away by his intent--this indeed is what our Mr. Brosnan achieved--I was blown away by his intent. The rest of the cast were deliciously watchable, totally loveable, bursting with unbelievable energy (given all the drinking), and folks I wouldn't mind having over for supper. I loved loved loved this movie. The man in the row behind us shouted out what I was merely thinking, as the movie came to an end: ONE MORE TIME!

"Mamma Mia" is just delightful and fun.. Beautiful people, scenery, costumes are a visual gift; the story is happy and sweet; the performances are wonderful (especially Meryl, Christine, and Julie) and the music brings it all together making a super fun time at the movies. Funny how after the movie you could tell in the lobby just who had been to "Mamma Mia"- they were smiling and had a little bounce in their step.. This is not Academy Award stuff but it will, sadly, probably be a long time until a movie makes you this happy.

I decided to wait to see Dark Knight when the crowds die down so I went to see Mamma Mia. Ill be honest with you I knew nothing about the story & have never seen the play but I was an ABBA fan as a kid & I actually thought this was a biography about ABBA.I was pleasantly suprised this movie was such a fun atmosphere as It had the audience clapping & singing along.I thought the story was great the way they tied everything to the songs was wonderful.I wasnt expecting this movie to be so funny but i found myself laughing non stop.Why Amanda Seyfried hasnt been in more movies is puzzling she drew you in every time she was on screen with her angelic girl next door beauty.

This movie never should have been made! It works so well as a stage musical, and totally falls flat as a movie. Yes, the scenery was gorgeous. But the major premise of this play is SINGING!!! Meryl Streep can't sing, Pearce Brosnan is gorgeous, but his singing is atrocious! And Meryl Streep is absolutely the WRONG person to portray Donna Sheridan! On oh, so many levels!!! No no no!!! And all of the musical numbers just come off as stupid when it's a movie, but have you jumping to the beat when it's a stage show!!!! Please, please don't ever do this again! I saw the stage show in Las Vegas and I was worried the big screen wouldn't do it justice. I was wrong. I laughed and enjoyed this movie almost as much as the stage show. They followed the stage performance to a T! If you've seen it live, try the movie. I don't think you will be disappointed. Loved, loved, loved this movie....never knew Meryl Streep could sing so well....Bosnan not so good but hey his gorgeous body makes up for his lack of singing ability. Perfect choice for the part of Sophie...beautiful actress with a beautiful singing voice. The supporting actors were great. And who couldn't fall in love with the setting in the Greek Islands. Sold out audience last nite (7-18-08) and I would definitly go see it again. Just love all the ABBA tunes that made this flick so great!!!!

Pure entertainment, great scenery, fun cast, good story line. Music wonderfully through me back to the 80's and ABBA, looked like all the cast was having fun making the movie. Meryl Streep is of course, magnificent. Brosnan is so out of character, but carries it off with such grace. Felt good about going, felt good watching it, excited about having seen it the next day. Go see it!

I loved the Broadway Musical, was concerned about the movie (hollywood being hollywood). I totally enjoyed the movie. If was fun to watch, fun to laugh and really interesting to hear everyone sing. Who knew? I plan on going again to enjoy. The only problem I had with the movie was the rapid cut aways during some of the musical numbers. It was quite distracting.

This is one of the best movies of this decade! It's fast-paced, interesting & extremely entertaining. My husband & I both loved it and he usually hates musicals. It was uplifting & intriquing at the same time which we think is tough to do. It holds your attention & makes you want to get up & dance & sing. See it, you will be glad you did!

This is a superior summer film that could easily stand on it's own any time of the year. If you're looking for intellectual depth, this mightn't be the film for you. IF you are looking for top rated actors who look like they thoroughly enjoyed working on this film and a film which makes you want to join the singing and dancing, this is it. Meryl Streep is beyond belief and this is her first opportunity to remind everyone of her singing ability in film since Postcards from the Edge. She is well matched in performance with her two best friends Juile Walters (Educating Rita, Mrs. Weasley in the Harry Potter films) and Christine Baranski (Katherine in The Birdcage and Mary Sunshine in Chicago). The men in the film, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgard, while vocally challenged when compared to the women, enjoy their roles immeasurably with Firth's "coming out" scene subdued but fun. Of the three, Skarsgard looks the least comfortable just letting go and geeting into it, though his character, Bill Anderson, is supposed to be the most spontaneous and adventurous of the three. I haven't enjoyed a summer film this much since the first "Pirates" film came out. Don't question or disdain the ABBA association if you are opposed to 70s pop. Just go and let yourself have a great time.
