Having been a long term (and repeat) fan of the stage version, my expectations may have been unfairly high, but I left the theater disappointed. While I agree with other reviewers about the high production values of this film, I feel that it underdelivered on the comedy and passion that came across in the original show. The undeniably great cast did a superb job with the script and direction they were given, but the emotional highs and lows all got watered down somehow in the screen adaptation. Also, the thinly veiled attempts to "update" the show with unnecessary "political correctness" seemed clumsy, heavy handed and artificial. Having said all that, you won't find better photography, locations, and musical production anywhere...the craftsmanship was excellent but the story did not survive the transplant. I won't say it's a waste of money, but you'd be better off renting it and saving your cash for the broadway version the next time it comes through town. For die hard ABBA fans, or those who've never seen the stage show, it could still be worth the ticket price and it was still a fun evening out with our friends. Girls, I'd go anywhere with my wife (I'd sit through opera muppets on ice to see her in an evening gown), but if you have a hard time getting your guy out to a chick flick, this is NOT the one to press him on. I advise against playing this card on a date night...you'll be paying him back in car chases and explosions for a very LONG time.

Mamma Mia was just plain fun... i have to admit i don't know if i would have bothered even seeing it had it not been for Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan... or if i hadn't seen Pierce Brosnan and a clip of the movie on Jon Stewart, which was just too funny. Don't get me wrong, think Abba songs are kitchy and fun and loved Muriel's Wedding, sang along to ever Abba song in that movie too... but live in NYC and haven't ever even wanted to see the musical... so i was truly pleased with how enjoyable the movie was... as always Christine Baranski and Julie Waters were wonderful... And i would so love to grow up to be the kind of woman Meryl Streep plays so well... the one who can say "... not hundreds of men". They all shined!... so enjoyed myself... though must also admit at times the scenery was so breathtaking i had trouble concentrating on what was going on in the show... so if you need to escape the heat wave, if you need something to take your mind off things, if you need to just escape the pressures of the day, to not take too something too seriously but just to enjoy... this is the movie to see.

We went to see Mamma Mia on opening night. I usually don't like musicals. This movie was GREAT!!!! I would go see it several more times. It was funny, and entertaining, not to mention the cast was great also. this was a great movie! the music was a blast, and the cast looked so natural. the only part i didn't like was the excessive amount of sexual innuendo. a little is ok to put up with, but the amount in this movie was a little over the top. still a great movie though!

This movie is horrendously bad—in the best possible way. The acting is so-so. The vocals are ok but not great. Amanda has a sweet, tremulous voice. Pierce Brosnan can NOT sing. The story line doesn't bear repeating. The ABBA songs hardly fit the plot line. Anyone who thought some of the Beatles' songs in Across the Universe were a stretch should see this movie; I promise you'll never think that again. But Mamma Mia! is delightful. Unintentionally and intentionally hilarious. Bright colors. Up beat. If you harbor a secret (or not-so-secret) love for ABBA, you'll likely be tempted to get up, dance, and sing. If you go in with the right attitude, you'll leave with a smile on your face.

This is a treat of a movie! It looked like Meryl Streep had a terrific time filming it--her joy is contagious. I had no clue she could sing that well. Pierce Brosnan's voice is not so strong, but after hearing that he wasn't very good, I was pleasantly surprised that he didn't actually embarrass himself. We loved Amanda Seyfried (who we call Lily at my house from her role in Veronica Mars). I will be eager to get the DVD when it is released so I can dance and sing along.

Although busy at times, the movie flows nicely. The music will have you tapping your feet and wanting to sing along. All together the cast was well selected, and provide for a nice feel good film that will leave a smile on your face.

I went to see Mamma Mia on opening night with my two girlfriends and I can tell you we laughed from the time the movie started and were still laughing later at home. From the moment this movie began, I had a silly grin plastered on my face. Totally unbelievable? Yes! Time line wrong? Yes! Can Pierce Brosnan sing! No! But Meryl Street cannot only sing, she can dance, she can do the splits and - oh, my - she jumps on the bed! Such fun for a lady of like-minded years! This is simply a movie to go, have fun, forget the world...and laugh, smile, and sing (at least in your heart) along with the actors - it's joy in its purest form.

I enjoyed every minute of this "feel good" movie. I had seen the stage production of Mamma Mia and loved it and the movie was absolutely just as much fun. The audience in the theatre applauded a couple times during the show and after the conclusion which was a "hoot". A good movie for the whole family and an introduction to the young of the wonderful music of ABBA. Who cares that we didn't hear trained voices for the most part - it was not necessary in this fun movie. Can't wait for the DVD to come out.

Loved the songs, the story and the setting. Meryl is solid as usual and I didn't know she could sing that well, but not surprising I guess, since she seems to do everything well. And as mentioned in some of the other reviews, Pierce can't sing, but he's perfect as Sam. Fun movie all the way around. I will see it again.

Once again, as they so often do, the "critics" got it wrong. We have seen the Mama Mia play 4 times (no we are not fanatics, we just love it) in London, New York, twice, & Las Vegas. The movie, while a different experience, is as good as the play with the fabulous scenery and location. The actors were top notch and Meryl Streep does a Fantastic job of singing. I think that most critics should go on perminet strike and stay there. Go to this movie and enjoy it

This movie was the best I've seen in a long time. It made you feel happy after seeing it. I did not realize what a wonderful voice Meryl Streep has. It had a wonderful story which made you cry a bit but most of the movie was very uplifting & joyful. The acting was out of this world. The girl who played Sofia was really great! I went to this movie with my friends and it was great. We all had a wonderful time, even the one year old! It was a lot of great singing and dancing and enough fun for the whole family. Who knew Karen from Mean Girls had a great voice she had been hiding!! It was an awesome movie and everyone should see it!

This movie was so refreshing. One moment I am crying and within a second I am laughing so hard my insides hurt. The cast was wonderful. The music even better. I wanted to get up and dance in the aisles.

My daughter and I saw this movie together, and we both thought it was a happy, cheerful, and entertaining movie we've seen in a very long time. Lots of singing, dancing, that it just makes you want to get up and sing and dance right along. For hours after I seen the movie, I was still singing. A very feel good movie!!!

We were both very excited with this movie. We had seen the stage play and were wondering if it could be as good. It was better! The acting was superb and Meryl Streep has a great voice. Everyone and everything about it is a must see. Can't wait to see it again.

My wife and I enjoyed this movie from start to finish, the production was brilliant and the music speaks for itself. We thought the actors as none vocalists did a great job .
