When I went to see this movie with a friend who is a big Speed Racer fan, I felt that even if the plot was weak, at least the visuals would be enough to carry it.
Well, I was right about the visuals. You felt you were in there with the racing, your heart in your mouth. For Speed Racer fans, this is a fantastic tribute to the anime, with references to different incarnations of the shows, cars from different episodes, anime itself, and even the original and English versions of the theme song.
The plot was slim but enough to satisfy, with some wonderful exposition on the state of the brother, Rex. The youngest brother, Spridle wound up being less annoying than I feared, and he carried some of the scenes with great humor.
I'd definitely recommend this film to racing fans, Speed Racer fans, CGI fans - pretty anyone unless they hate action and loud, fast thrills.

Die hard speed racer thought it did the job. Could have been better, action was almost over the top. special effects were matrix like but they actor who played speed could have been better.
All in all if you like speed racer you'll enjoy. If you 're not a fan you'll probably hate it.

Speed Racer is highly entertaining, very pretty, and with some genuinely thrilling race sequences. But it is extremely long and at times hard to follow. I liked that it bases itself on what appears to be a consistent "real" fictional world with little attempt to worry that it has to explain itself to us.

This movie was about 40 minutes longer than it needed to be. Too much heavy dialogue where it didn't need to be which only weighed down the movie. I'd lke to see a better director cut this movie and then re-release it. It would probably fare better.

Speed Racer will probably be regarded in many years to come as a cult classic. I can see this as being considered what we now consider 2001: A Space Odyssey to be, a masterpiece!
How do you take a very badly animated cartoon and make it a movie? The Wachowski Brothers had a lot of live up to. There are several ways this movie could be taken, completely comical and off the way or completely serious. Both of this approaches would have completely ruined what turned out to be a fantastic work of modern art.
Speed Racer carefully blends the dynamics of a well thought out script, with amazing on your seat action and incredible special effects. Yes there are some times where your head will be spinning and anyone who experiences seizures should be warned. But all in all I found this movie completely amazing. Touching in many parts, incredible mind blowing in others and all in all good fun for the whole family (and not just families who watch NASCAR.)
What is even more amazing is that is captures the essence of the cartoon perfectly without being overly hooky. This could of turned out as bad as one of Will Ferrell's movies, but the comedic bits that are dashed in just enough to give you that laugh you need, nothing more.
The style of this movie is completely nothing we have seen before. Years from now it will be regarded as one of the ground breakers of modern movies. No more will we have to endure boring movies with nothing special added to it. We are living in the age of the Payback, 300, SIn City and now Speed Racer. This is the next stage of viewing entertainment and Speed Racer just raised the bar even higher!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Loaded up the family and planned for a great night at the movies! Only problem, we saw Speed Racer.
5 adults all agreed it was the worst movie we have ever seen.
5 kids ages (all boys) ages 6 to 12 hated it as well.
Turns out that one of the kids with us is prone to light sensitive migranes. Well guess what! He left the show with one.
The movie was too long for kids, and far too difficult for them to follow. They could have easily left out about 1 hour of the movie and it would have been so much better. After the first race sequence you have kind of seen it all.
Instead of going to this movie with your kids stay at home and rent "The Cowboys" with John Wayne, my boys liked it so much more!

The Brothers W and their special effects team did an amazing job of adapting the classic anime series into a roller-coaster ride of a film. Non-stop action, bright lights, color, music....
BUT this movie is not for everyone. The non-stop lights and colors are hard to take, and literally made one of my kids so ill that he threw up and had to leave the theater. I would especially recommend that anyone faint of stomach or otherwise affected by an overstimulation of flashing lights and colors (epileptics, autistics, etc.) avoid seeing this movie on a large screen and wait for cable.
Overall, it was a fun movie, the cast was wonderful and I was happy to have one of my childhood heroes (Racer X) back.... Parents should choose carefully whether their children can handle the over-stimulation.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is the FIRST movie that is a cartoon remake done PERFECTLY! The W. brothers sliced and diced an entire season of the cartoon into a 2 hr. movie and did not miss a single beat. ONLY the W. brothers could have pulled this off. I still remember running from school to sit in front of the TV to watch the cartoon. And to see it remade on the silver screen was amazing. Even more important than the visualizations and special effects was the fact that the moral of the story was you can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it. And "good guys" DON'T finish last! EVERY child, even adult for that matter, needs to know this. Shout out to the W. brothers for making a movie that was visually stunning as well as a movie that exuberates positiveness from start to finish!

This movie was about as much fun as one could expect to have at the theater. I laughed, cried and had a romping good time, adrenaline rushing with every fast turn and flip. At one point in one of the racing segments, I turned to my husband in delight and said, "This is GREAT!"
Who knew the Racer family were also martial arts experts? I forgot that part about the cartoon.
Spritle and the Chimp offered comic camp, a la Scoobie and Shaggy. The rest of the characters were equally cartoonish, but, hey, this is a cartoon brought to life, so what would you expect? The bad guys are very bad, and the good guy are very good with just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.
My 8 year old had a hard time understanding some of the subtleties of the plot, but was mesmerized by the visual effects and the pacing.
I say Go Speed Racer, Go!

Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, I had high hopes for a movie based on "Speed Racer". But, there are few words that can do justice to how bad this movie is -- let's start with awful, terrible, rotten, and any other synonym you can come up with. It was a complete and total waste of the price of movie admission.
What there is of a story is driven by incessant primary colors flashed across the screen to create some kind of futuristic race track. After seeing the movie, I now understanding why the overwhelming majority of movie critics described it as a vomit of partially chewed Skittles candies.
There is virtually no story: the actors have nothing to work with so the acting is just dreadful; and the frenzied pace of the purported special effects left me wanting to leave the theater less than an hour after the movie started.
By the way, any movie that relies upon a chimpanzee to move its plot forward demonstrates how bad the human actors must be.
I don;t know the target audience for this movie, but it is most certainly not anyone over the age of 5 years old. SKIP THIS MOVIE!!

first the 5 Star rating os for your kids, for adults its really a low 4 star, but this movie is all about the kids. only 1 word of profanity in the whole movie, the fight scene are on the steered to the comical side. The writers have kept the story line as close to the original cartoon, we adults remember, as possible. Bottom line a risk free FAMILY movie for the summer

If you are a special effects junkie this is the movie for you. Slow at times, the race scenes make up for what the plot lacks. It pretty much follows the original Speed Racer storyline. The chimp and the "little brother" keep you laughing. Overall a decent movie, based on the previews, I just expected a little more, especially from the creators of the Matrix.

From the first frame to the last, this film (as beautiful as some of the scenes were rendered) was incredibly confusing and overdone. The race sequences were more like fantastical dream-sequences which were impossible to follow or understand who was winning, what was a stake or why any of this noisy arcade-game of a movie was worth the $11 admission. A complete Wachowski Brother self-indulgence. Bring back the old Speed Racer cartoons that I know and love!

I don't get what the reviewers are complaining about - they've seen too many art movies, I guess. Speed Racer rocks! 2 hrs 15 minutes flew by - just like speed! Granted, there were a few times the movie seemed to slow down, but the plot required it. I LOVED the racing scenes - should have been more! My only complaint is, there wasn't enough of the Mach 5. It was the star of the TV series, it should have been given more play in the movie. Pops never built a "Mach 6" - he just fixed up the "5" and made it better. Go Speed!

Speed Racer was just okay. It started slow and didn't speed up until the final race scene. A huge chunk of the middle of the movie could have been taken out and would not have been missed. A bit violent for the younger crowed too who might want to see it for the racing action. The ending definitely saved the movie.

I will admit up front that I had no interest in seeing this movie until I realized last week that it was being released in IMAX. My comment at the time was "I still expect it to suck, but at least it will suck BIG and FAST."
Well, as it turns out, it didn't really suck. Problem is, I don't know what it did. Someone asked me if I liked it and I had to think for a while before answering.
The best I can say is that, similar to The Matrix Revolutions, it was pretty clear that the Wachowskis knew what they wanted and pursued it for good or for bad.
The big question is why this?
I've seen people ask why the Wachowskis wanted to do a Speed Racer movie, and the only answer I can come up with is: because they wanted to make a movie that looked like this, felt like this, and thrummed with this particular pulse.
Frankly, there's not much reason to pay attention to the plot: it's standard Speed Racer fare. We get two track races (and hints of a third) and a cross-country race, all taking place in a world where the physics that apply fall somewhere between the tiny forces of slot car racing and the imaginary ones you find in fantasy video games.
The big question is whether you can endure the eye-candy, which is almost all there is to the movie, even to the point where the Wachowskis reinvent montage...which is the only way to make this movie work at all.
In fact, if it weren't for a couple slower scenes inserted to move the story forward, the whole thing would have been one long montage sequence.
One of the most interesting things to me was the use of iconography throughout the film: because it moves so quickly, it has to impart information in a hurry, so it uses iconic images, iconic editing, and even iconic cliches to get its points across in a hurry.
There's no question in my mind that this movie is very skillfully--perhaps even brilliantly--assembled.
But it all comes down to "why?" There just doesn't seem to be enough purpose. Even "summer blockbuster" doesn't seem to be enough to cover the sheer candy-coated approach to this film.
One last thing: much of the cast was clearly chosen to look the part, but Christina Ricci is actually captivating as Trixie. I don't know if they digitally altered her looks at all, but she's got perfect anime features: willow thin (when did she get THIS skinny?), clear, simple expressions, and big doe eyes. She looks like what the artists were thinking of when they started drawing.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Our whole family enjoyed this movie (ages of children 12 yr girl, 9 and 4 yr boys). We knew Dad would love it regardless, but it was a pleasant surprise that we all left the theatre looking forward to seeing it again.
We all had seen the original animated series and were concerned that the live action movie might not capture the feel of the cartoon. Not the case, although, we all agree that being familiar with the original cartoon was helpful. I know I left the theatre wanting to go out and drive!

First and foremost, "Speed Racer" is a movie targeted for old-school "Speed Racer" fans and also to gain a new, young fan base in today's children. On those levels, it works brilliantly. However, if you are not in one of those two groups, the movie will just not work for you. I was a big "Speed Racer" fan as a kid and it took at least half the film for me to start to "get it". (It should be noted that I have not seen a single episode in a good 30 years!) The first thing that hits you (almost assaults you, in fact) is that this movie is as much about it's "look" as it is to any semblance of a story. It uses a palette of bright, primary colors that is so overwhelming that it is almost off-putting. This truly is a live-action anime cartoon, a bold choice which is pulled off perfectly. One of the main issues with this movie is that it is overly long. The first half, in which all of the plot lines are set up, could have used some streamlining and editing to tighten up the story-telling. The major villain in the film uses stock price manipulation as his motivation and this whole concept is way over the head of the target audience. Once the film "kicks in" in the second half, it is nearly brilliant and certainly fun to watch. I will also note that the kids in the audience all cheered at the right times and laughed at all the right moments...loudly, so the movie is a success on many levels. However, the plodding, confusing first half (constant jumping back and forth between flashbacks and current time) was really difficult to get through. There were times when I felt like it was going nowhere and wanted to just bail. The second half is redeeming on many levels, but the first half will definitely affect my grade. The plotline is classic: Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is an idealistic young man who just loves being behind the wheel and racing. He learns that the world he yearns to be a part of is wrought with corruption and everything he thought he knew is wrong. With the help of the mysterious "Racer X" (Matthew Fox), he seeks to make a difference and prove that an independent racer can persevere in the corporate-controlled fixed world of racing. Of course, the iconic part of "Speed Racer" is the car, Mach 5, which is presented here in all of its stunning beauty. Overall, the filmmakers (The Wachowski Borthers of "The Matrix" fame) did a brilliant job of literally bringing an anime hit to life. The plodding first half makes it fall just short of a rousing success.
Grade: C
Yes, I recommend this movie.
