I loved the movie. My husband chose to go with me and he didn't care for it. It is definately a chick flick all the way around. But a great movie!! I would watch it again. It's all about how lost some women get in their relationships and what one woman does to find herself for once in her life. Great story line and Julia Roberts did an amazing job.

The acting was terrific! This movie is for anyone who feels responsible for a failed relationship. Everyone needs to forgive themselves, and need to really love themselves- This was a great journey! I loved the movie.

I read the book a while ago, so I wasn't too tainted with comparing one to another. The movie showed us a modern woman with an age old dilemma. Personal growth and change puts in a different place than where we thought we'd be.
I think the time she spent with the guru was too short, as far as the film goes. The film needed to delve deeper intp Liz's experiences trying to know herself.

Of course, it will be the abridged version of the book. The film was a refresher of sorts to one who has read the book. The movie basically captured the Italy experience, but the India part fell short for me. I thought, there should’ve been more emphasis and creativity put on the scenes which showed Liz’ struggle on meditation, her daily spiritual realizations in the process which should’ve have built up to the supposedly transcending scene in the tallest place in the Ashram. Julia Roberts was a natural and the substance of her character almost palpable in every scene. Superb cinematography and musical score. Appreciation of the film depends greatly on your own experience of the book. I think reading the book first will be a good idea before you jump into the hype of watching the film. Sure, it pales in comparison to the richness of the book, but I recommend it nonetheless. Why? maybe I'm just being a fan of all those behind EPL, specially Liz G. and Julia R.

Being a teacher, I am always comforted to know that once again...the book is better than the movie. Every time I test the theory it holds true. The book had so much more emotion and detal. Julia Roberts is a wonderful actress...but I could not buy her as Liz. The real Liz is more complex...being socially bubbly and witty but also very dark and depressed within the next chapter. I wanted to see more sarcasm, charm and raw emotion in the character on screen. The book is supposed to be about LIZ...the women..and instead the movie chose to focus more on the her and the guys. Show me more pasta! Where are the heavy and inspiring religious experiences?
With that said, I did love the camera techniques with close ups of the food dishes. Also I liked how they changed the part and had the Thanksgiving meal in the morning when the turkey was ready. Seeing the beautiful backdrops of Italy, India, and Indonesia were far beyond what I could crate in my mind while reading. I went with my mother and sister and got some soft serve cherry dip icecream after...so it was a good night. I would still say it is good to see.

7 of us gals went to see this after work and the average rating was a 3. The backdrop to the movie was amazing as was the music. Characters were all well played but her relationships were not always believeable. We could not 'feel' what Robert's character felt so the movie lost alot there. 5 out of 7 of us could not get invested in what her character felt. Will likely read the book to get more out the story. I'd recommend renting instead of seeing in the theatre.

Having just finished reading the book I was looking forward to seeing the movie. It did not disappoint. Many times reading a book first can make the movie seem underwhelming - that was not the case here. Julia Roberts is her usual amazing self. How can you beat the venues that are part of the movie. Was dying to eat pizza and pasta afterwards - so don't eat first!!!!! The whole premise of the movie is something I wish I had known 20 years ago!!!

Julia Roberts is a great actor and it shows here with her total immersion into this role. However, Ryan Murphy just cannot figure out how to make the movie work. Like The Color Purple, this is a difficult book to capture on the screen. The movie just wanders all over the place, giving us tantalizing glimpses of a evolving story that never seems to come together.
The male leads, especially Hadi Subiyanto, really perform well but cannot save it either. Worse of all, the ending is cliche and rushed which spoils Javier Bardem performance.
Go see it to observed Italian food consumed with love and gusto (the middle part) but don't expect much more.

This movie was a major disappointment, except for the fact that Javier Bardem was the love interest. By the way, why don't you even list him as being in the movie, Movietickets.com? Italy was lovely to look at, except having her go to Naples - probably the ugliest city in Italy - was disappointing. The part filmed in India was so bad that the woman I attended with literally fell asleep. The entire, disjointed, silly movie was a waste of money.

I was pretty disappointed with the movie. Based on a true story, they could have made a truly beautiful film from it, but instead it's just another predictable Hollywood production. I'm giving it two stars - one for Julia Roberts being an excellent actress nevertheless and the other one because going there not expecting that is just being naive on my part.

If you read the book, than you probably got more out of the movie, than most others. What is great about this movie, is what you "get" out of it. Liz Gilbert did what was best for her, and there is nothing wrong with it. Yes, she went the unconventional route, but, we've all had to "find" ourselves at some point, and this was hers. What matters, is not so much how she got there, but, what she got from it in the end, and how she is happy now. I love the deep underlying messages in the movie as well, which was what you also got from the book. I absolutely recommend you read and then watch EAT PRAY LOVE. :)

This movie was wonderful! It was so easy to relate with her pain and her joy. I recommend reading the book first, or even afterwards, to get a more in depth understanding of the characters. I will definitely own this one when it comes out on DVD!
