Beautiful and revolting -- best film of the year.

Gritty and gripping, unbelievably believable... to call this movie the best Batman movie ever would be to do it a disservice -- to call it the best superhero movie of all time, even, would not be fair. This movie transcends genre to become, simply, one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life.

Christian Bale's Batman is dark and gut-wrenching, and his Bruce Wayne is both foppish on the outside and brooding by turns. Gary Oldman is the movie's hidden star as Jim Gordon, turning in a performance that carries the loftier portrayals through. Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent is charismatic and compelling in his intensity, and Maggie Gyllenhaal positively shines as Rachel, a significant upgrade from Batman Begins' Katie Holmes.

But, of course, the standout performance by far -- unsurprisingly -- is Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. Watching his Joker is like watching a horrible, unavoidable accident unfold, and you are entirely gripped with morbid fascination. You cannot look away from him for a second even as part of you wants to run screaming from the theater. The final image of the Joker, beautiful and revolting at once, is one that will haunt me for a long, long time.

With a beautiful script that goes far beyond the usual examination of good vs. evil, hero vs. villain, dark vs. light, and a musical score that both complements and completes the breathtaking cinematography, this film has, quite frankly, done something incredibly. 'The Dark Knight' has thrown down the gauntlet in the face of all movies to come, changed not only the genre of comic book adaptations but the genre of drama itself.

Like Batman to Gotham City, this film has changed cinema forever. There's no going back. While the audience is presented with a view of the bruises, lacerations and scars lacing Bruce's back, Alfred tells him that he should know his limits. Wayne replies, 'Batman has no limits.' I can think of no better metaphor for the film. Despite the bruises, the scarring, the repeated blows and electric shocks that this movie delivers to its audience, it has no limits -- it goes everywhere it can go, and does not hesitate to dive deeper. It trusts its audience to keep up, a demanding and exhausting two-and-a-half hour ride for dear life on the back of a thunderbolt. The night is darkest just before dawn -- but when caught in the depths of this masterpiece, one cannot help but wonder if the promise of dawn is gone forever.

I found the movie to be extremely well down and entertaining. The definite highlight was heath ledger, his acting alone won me over from the beginning. Adding to my clap is a wonderful story with well written scripts. The downs were an anti-climatic ending, and some bad casting choices. Is a definite "must-see", worth every dollar!

This movie does not disapoint. Heath Ledger is amazing as the Joker. His interpretation is flawless. Everyone else repises their roles excellently and Maggie is a nice adidtion. Highly reccommended, see this movie as fast as you can get to a theater.

Greatest Batman Yet!!!!!

This is sooooooooo gooood! Two face is so sick, he looks disturbingly like Eddie from Iron Maiden.(Eddie is the grotesque death figure mascot of I.M.) It is very interesting and kept my attention the whole time. The joker makes the movie work. He challenges the very human limitiations of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Like a dark Messiah, he liberates anarchy and destruction like paint on a canvas. It is dark and gritty. It feels like he is really a violent schizophrenic. Jack Nicholson's joker looks like a complete pansy compared to Ledger. And two face!!! This movie rocks and I predict it is going to clean house at the oscars for everything. It is going to be like the year "The Lord of the Rings" won everything. Incredible movie that I will see as many times as I can while playing in the theater and will def. buy the dvd!!! Do yourself a favor and go see this movie on the big screen, buy a great big bucket of popcorn and get extra butter. Its worth the artery clogging!! Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heath Ledger and some other people

Believe the hype. I generally do not watch movies at all - I consider film to be an excellent medium which has been squandered and means little more than 90-minute commercials for lifestyles that none of us live and products that put us further out of our means. That being said, this was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Let me say this: one of the main issues that potential viewers of this movie might have is whether or not Ledger's Joker performance lives up to Nicholson's. It's inevitable; you'll be mentally comparing the two, until approximately 25 minutes into the movie, at which point the Joker introduces himself. From this point onward, there will be no thoughts of Nicholson's performance. It's that good. Right down to the mannerisms which are commonly found in violently sociopathic criminals, such as the weird lip-smacking...Ledger is believable as the definitive Joker.
Aaron Eckhart's character was also excellent - as District Attorney Harvey Dent, you believe that the guy is driven by an urge to do good. His performance convinces - I believe in Harvey Dent. Also, unlike...say, Spiderman 3's Venom, his turn as the villain Two-Face receives enough screentime to flesh out the character and draw the viewer into his story.
Christian Bale also delivers, although his over-distorted gruff voice as Batman makes you expect a bloody lung to be propelled from his mouth at any second - kind of silly and over-the-top. Still, a solid performance. The supporting cast also does their job - but I feel that I speak not only for myself when I commend Nolan on getting rid of Rachel Dawes. I have no idea why Hollywood feels that no story is strong enough to stand without a romantic angle. Really tragic. Anyhow, watch this movie. Bad enough if you didn't see this classic on opening night, hurry up and get to it!

This movie was beyond amazing. The acting left me breathless, horrified, and inspired all at once. Every character was portrayed beautifully-- particularly the ever demented Joker. Heath did an Oscar worthy rendition of one of the most notorious villains of comic book history and has set the new standard for movie villains as well. I saw this @ 11:59 Thursday night, and I will be seeing this again for the next three nights.

Although he is no longer among us, Heath has immortalized himself in history. As for the directing? Bravo, Mr. Nolan. Bravo.

I have seen many movies in my lifetime and I have to say this movie is arguably one of the best movies I have ever seen. It provides a wonderful example of the human spirit at its finest. Heath Ledger became the Joker and was overwhelmingly convincing in his role which makes it even more saddening that he has passed on. The storyline kept you in suspense and provided a nonstop rollercoaster ride into the mind of a madman. I was literally awestruck by the entire movie.

As the mob of Gotham City is forced underground by the Batman, a new criminal is emerging. The Joker (Heath Ledger) is a savvy criminal who has no personal boundaries. He starts to test the Batman's limits. This leaves Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), with a dilemma as to how far he should go to stop the Joker. He decides that Gotham needs a "face" of hope that he could not give them, but Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) can.
This story surpassed my expectations, despite the fact that my expectations were already very very high. The trailers did a good job leaving out the overall dilemma of the story and left it to be a surprise. While there were many outstanding performances, by both cast and crew, many will agree with me when I say that Heath Ledger surpassed anyone's expectations and became more than just a heartthrob. He stood out in a way that left me extremely paranoid and scared, as he should have. He definitely deserves the oscar buzz, and hopefully eventual nomination. The overall cast also did an amazing job. Christian Bale's Batman was brutal and honest and the rest of the cast greatly displayed a "fear" that the Joker instilled in everyone. There were many levels of the story, but none left me confused or annoyed. They all clashed together perfectly and Christopher Nolan outdid his usual amazing directing and became outstanding. Usually when my expectations are high, I am dissapointed as it did not deliver as much as the trailer promised. But I am happy to say that this outdid anything I had in mind. It is definitely a darker movie filled with more suspense than Batman Begins and does an excellent job of keeping the good name to the Nolan Batman franchise.

The Joker

I don't care what this movie is called, it's all about Heath Ledger's Joker. Bale was decent, and his overly-cocky rendition of Bruce Wayne the businessman is great, but his grunt-like monotone in scenes where he is disguised wears on you after a while, and is becomes tedious for the viewer to try to understand everything he's saying (especially at a midnight premiere for a two-and-a-half hour movie). There could have been a happy medium somewhere between the Wayne voice and the Batman voice.
Other minor details of the movie could have been done better as well (although, admittedly, some of this it nit-picky). First, Two-Face was made into way too minor of a villain. He shows up for maybe the last half-hour of the film, kills a couple of people, and then gets knocked off the side of a building by Batman. Especially with the awesome grotesqueness of how his face was mangled and the post-fire appearance of it, you'd think that Dent becoming an enemy would be given some more time. However, with how long the film was as it is, it's understandable to see why they decided to just let him finally die. Also, one part of the film confused me a bit - the scene where Dent interrogates one of the Joker's cronies. I just wondered why the guy was even involved in the film. Was he simply there in order to provide the knowledge that the Joker needed to use mentally ill psychopaths as his cohorts, or was there a bigger point to it? A buddy of mine I was with suggested that this might be an introduction into the Riddler, because he was supposed to be a paranoid schizophrenic, as the guy was described to be by Batman. If this is the case, why not lend this a little more time (no secret scene, Mr. Nolan?), or if it's not the case, just get him out of the movie...
Then again, it all becomes irrelevant when Ledger gets on the screen. From the beginning when Ledger pulls off the bank heist, killing his companions in the process with a twisted plot to get them all to turn against each other until only one is left for him to take out, you can tell that he excels at making people turn against each other and fostering a sense of paranoia in people, which fuels his role as being the "Agent of Chaos." By the end of the movie, everyone involved in the attempt to catch the Joker recognizes that they're simply being manipulated and used in his grand schemes, which he seems to develop on whim. He even admits that doesn't have a plan for Gotham, but just enjoys seeing chaos spread and the city fall apart.
But all of what has been mentioned is how the Joker was scripted to be. Ledger makes his own incredible contributions to the character that allow him to be more believable as such a freakish villain. From the sinister high-pitched laugh to the flashing of his tongue, from the stumbling and skipping around like a giddy drunk to the frankness of his tone of voice when he is making seemingly unimportant and downright ridiculous demands in heated situations (which usually become key parts of his plans i.e. "I just want my phone call."). Not to be selfish, but it's a damn good thing that Ledger lived long enough to make this film, because nobody alive today could have done nearly as well as he.

This was an amazing movie. I loved every moment of it. It plays the villians soo good. Heath Ledger will be severely missed by all now. His performance was so good because he was such a good method actor. Christian Bale was great as usual. He played a great batman I would put him in the top 2 of great batmans. Im waiting to see how they throw two face in the next batman. I will definately be seeing this movie at least two more times.
