This movie is full of colorful and inventive CGI and graphics. Loved the imaging and appreciate the creativity behind it. However, the story is one that is as old as time itself and I found myself very bored by the end of the overly long movie. This movie would have been better if it was about an hour and half shorter. The production was what I expected out of this particular producer. The directing was done very well. This movie is a really good example of less is more. I would recommend it to a friend, but would tell them to take their Ipod for the long drawn out ending.

As a agraphic artist it is always easy to be critical of CGI animation, but this movie was so well done it was almost easy to forget that aspect. My whole family enjoyed it and clearly recognized the analogy with the early Native Americans and Custer's Last Stand. An amazing movie and I can't wait to go see it again.

The last time I was this impacted by a movie was when I saw the first Star Wars movie for the first time! The visual effects were stunning and the story line was insiteful. James Cameron has outdone himself. I've already recommended this movie to friends and family!

The plot was not full of unexpected twists, but it did have some underlying messages that are there for the taking if you care to think past the mayhem that fills the screen. The film was a cross between the sci-fi novels that my father grew up reading and the cowboys vs indians movie that he watched as a child -- except the indians are no longer the "bad guys" here. It would not have succeeded had it not been an immersive enviornment -- but it was, and i am going to see it a second time with another set of friends.

It's all been said before, but the special effects were the best yet and if I could do one thing right now it would be to fly on a Banshee! Cameron has another winner. I saw it in 2D and now I want to see it in 3D!

This was the best movie I have seen in a long time, full of supense and with victory triumphant. While it could have done without the sprinkle of hard curse words for which I will only give 4 stars. Overall a great movie full of action and adventure a true spectacle.

Avatar has used digital technology to create creatures that express feeling and emotion that you can actually sense just as you would with a real human actor. That is by itself no mean achievement. The idea of a human who moves into an alien body and experiences their life physically and mentally is very creative and the execution of this idea stellar.
Now for the criticism. The theme of 'going native' and empathizing with an alien culture's beliefs and view points is unoriginal and extremely predictable, so much so that parts of the movie are a little boring at times
But , hey this is a fantasy flick and people should not expect much more than to get their $10's worth of entertainment. And i certainly did.

Great movie on many levels. Choose to go to the IMAX Experience over the regular one. The graphics were amazing. Scenery footage was out of this universe. Wow!

I have seen it twice and may see it again. Best movie of 2009 and possibly one of the best movies I have ever seen. You do not need to like si-fi to enjoy it. Even after 160 minutes it have you wanting more!

Avatar from the very beginning is a total immersion into another reality, the visual and audio transport you into another world.
The graphics are beyond anything you have experievnced to date, the storyline takes from the impact of the twin towers collapsing to the false deity of corporate greed driving mankind insane to the relavation of a life without crass consumerism.
Thank you Mr. Cameron for an outstanding "Al Gore Tree Huggerific" epic.

Fantastic special effects! James Cameron did a good job of creating a fantasy world that leaves you wanting more. In spite of the fact some of the creatures were obviously representative of real animals (horses, rhinos, panthers, wolves) and mythical creatures (dragons minus the fire), and the storyline was predictable in places, I still throughly enjoyed the film and would go see it again, and will buy it when available. The 3D was a fun experience and worth the extra price.

I watched this movie with my husband and 2 kids. Great acting from the actors, and the special effects were just spectacular! My 10-year old boy loved it. For pure entertainment, I highly recommend this movie. Don't expect perfect dialogue or storyline - there's no such thing, but this movie overcomes its shortcomings with the acting and special effects.

I spent about $50 for myself and two kids all told after buying the tickets online (with surcharge) and concessions and what did I get? A very, very long movie with political under-tones (pick your war: Iraq, the taming of the Wild West, etc.) and just enough action to keep you from getting bored. The special effects and imagery were beautiful but the movie lacked the type of pacing and "I'll never forget that scene" impact you'd expect from a movie hyped this much. Whenever you leave a movie and say to yourself, "wow the music was one of the best parts," advise others to stay home and buy DVD.

I was looking forward to this movie but after watching it I was very disappointed.
The action was okay, however, the movie would have been much better without the language -- specifically 'GD'. There are other words that could have definitely been used as replacemnets.

This is my personal favourite movie of all time (so far). Saw the 3D version. The imagery was Awesome....Luminescent!.... The creatures and environment touched my soul like the magnificent beauty of diving a coral reef with endless visibility. I loved the characters, and especially the story line. Your very essence will sense the incredible esoteric truth of it. I will be seeing it again, next time in IMAX.

Our entire family 10 to 72 yrs enjoyed the film. It really captures your imagination and draws you into the story. The films does utilize a lot of previous plot lines -- there's a little Pocahontas theme going; and little District 9 concept, and maybe even a little Dances with Wolves plot line thrown in there. Still a very enjoyable movie -- we really liked it.

Brought my teenage kids with me to see Avatar well aware of the hype but deliberately avoided spoilers/plot clues so that it would be a fresh experience.
Summary- we all loved it.
The plot, however is nothing new. Mix 3 parts Dances With Wolves, 2 parts Matrix, and 1 part Predator and you're good to go.
Even with that, (and the upcharge our theater levied for the 3D glasses) the trip was well worth it. AMAZING special effects and scenes, gripping (if tired/familiar) storyline, and engaging (if somewhat cliché) roles/acting.
Ignore the many critics that have said that James Cameron fell flat with this one and just go- be SURE you are going to the 3D version, a 2D (traditional) version is playing as well.
