Tim Burton did a wonderful job of telling this story. It had all the elements that I have come to love in his films. Subtle comedy, good storyline, great characterizations and hidden surprises that just completed the effect. I saw it in 2D and am going to try to see it in 3D soon.
The first impression that I got was one of disappointment that the original Evelyn O'Connell was replaced with Maria Bello (a very fine actress, but not an Evie replacement). Then there was the lazy, unimaginative Johnathan who owns an Egyptian style nightclub in Singapore. The suprises were shallow and devoid of substance. The story was a rewrite of an ancient Chinese legend complete with Shangrila, Yeti's, Dragons and other myths that did not make sense in the light of technological advances in the 1940's. I did however like the writers use of sorcery as an explanation for all those terracota soldiers. The Mummy was exciting, fast paced and full of over the top special effects. I would recommend it to my friends with a caveat that they should not expect a continuation of the first two Mummy films.
