Believe, in the darkest of times

In a world where the West becomes less and less connected to religion, in a country where most people mock the president daily, in an atmosphere where cynicism and indifference take precedence over patriotism and dedication to morals and beliefs, it is no wonder this movie was received poorly.
It inspires thought, and thought is something many people don't want to do when they go to the movies. But thinking about this movie may just change the way you think about the world.
I Want To Believe is not only an entertaining X-file, with excellent acting and that exciting, creepy 'X-files' feeling to it, but it is a social commentary on the current state of mind in this decade.
It has always been more acceptable to follow the crowd than it has to take a stand, but the few that take a stand are the ones who become great. Mulder and Scully, for those of you who remember, were two individuals who didn't believe what everyone else did. They took a stand.
And when you ask questions about your faith, about whether God can speak through a man who has committed the most unspeakable crime imaginable, a crime against a child...when you ask questions like that, you strengthen your beliefs. You don't weaken them.
This movie encourages you to ask questions like that (including that question), in true X-files form. X-files was a thought-provoking show. A show that forced you to come to your own conclusions instead of just spoon-feeding them to you. And in a world where our beliefs are spoon-fed to us by the media and by our peers, this movie sticks out and takes a stand.
What can inspire people to believe in something when they have lost faith in their government, in God, in themselves? What can inspire Americans to say in public that they are proud to be Americans? An X-files movie? No. Only you can inspire yourself to do those things, but this movie may help you take a step forward, and not just pretend to stand for something, but really, truly, throw your all at whatever it is that you want to believe in.
The X-files might just be one of the best shows in history, because while it entertains you with creepy plots and exciting adventures, it also encourages intelligent, individual thought. It says that it's okay to be different, in fact it's *necessary*. Go see the movie, and stay after the credits for a little surprise. You'll only be disappointed if you refuse to ask yourself what it is you want to believe.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
