The film is arguably the best to date. With the maturity of the actors comes the maturity of the films, sincerely, but fans of the book will be slightly disappointed. The relationship between Ron and Hermione is built up to almost nothing in the film. Hermione sulks and cries about Ron the whole film and by the end Ron doesn't even remember calling out for her in the hospital after he's poisoned. The funeral scene is missing completely. I thought the character relationships fell by the wayside, but there are some very cute and funny moments and despite the novel differences the film is certainly enjoyable and worth the look on fellow theater goers faces at the end.
Although Brendan Fraser is a guilty pleasure of mine I must say I had a few problems with the film. I heard that Rachel Weisz refused to come back because she told the director that she was too young to play a 21 year old's mother. Well, then they should have killed her OFF! The new actress looked too old to be Brendan Fraser's wife and her performance fell flat. She was quite distracting, I would have preferred the film spend the time on the father/son relationship. That aside- I thought the film was at least entertaining. They could have used Jet Li in the human form a little more- (They made the same mistake in The Mummy Returns with the character played by The Rock)And that first chase scene through the streets of Chinese New Year ran long. But overall, the film is fun, and if fans don't look too hard or expect too much, I think they will enjoy a fun comedy adventure. Brendan Fraser movies just make me happy, they don't have to make sense or win Oscars.
