I loved the opening credits. The grittiness and tone reminded me a little of Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime". I was also reminded a little of "The Incredibles" since both deal with costumed heroes trying to live normal lives. I loved the music choices, particularly the use of "All Around the Watchtower". I admire actors who can play through a mask and Jackie Earl Haley pulled it off. Bill Crudup hit the right marks as Dr Manhattan; his performance reminded me of HAL in “2001”. These characters are flawed. They make mistakes. But even the Comedian deserves redemption in the end, not death. The biggest criticism is we do not see enough regular people reacting to events. I think that would have drawn the audience deeper into this world.
This was a very good adaption of a comic book character. However, it was not the best. Heath Ledger's performance nailed many of the character traits of the Joker. But Batman seemed more two-dimensional this time around. Batman is supposed to be a great detective, but it seemed like he was more interested in Bond-like gadgets than criminalistics or criminal psychology. Visually, Two-Face nailed it, but seemed a bit cliche near the end. Harvey did not argue with himself and I thought he was too ready with flipping his coin to determine a person's fate. Was it worth seeing in IMAX? Yes. Was it a good movie? Yes. But it certainly wasn't a great movie.
