A welcome new direction

Exciting from beginning to end, this quality action flick pays enough homage to the original series without shoehorning the film into a formula that had grown stale.
Several allusions throughout the film tie it into the Trek universe, but in ways that feel fresh and might even surprise if you don't remember your Trek lore.
This is an origin story done right, with disparate characters brought together believably in a crisis, bonding through it with courage, sacrifice and humor.
An excellent actioner and a refreshing take on the Trek universe that still manages to honor its source material. Abrams pulled off quite a feat.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great characters and action

I laughed when a reviewer complained about 2-1/2 hours of character development. That's what I like about this movie. The depth of characterization and story set this apart, and the action holds its own with other superhero movies. In that way, it's intimate and epic at the same time, and worth seeing on the big screen, especially for those who value substance as well as style.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
