Hype can often ruin movies. It seems that in the last few years things have grown to such a fevered pitch around certain "blockbusters" that there could never be a way for the movie to live up to its expectations...
The Dark Knight has found a way to live up to, and surpass, all the hype. Just the performances of Bale, Ledger, Cain, Eckhart and the rest of the incredible cast would push this movie to the top of almost any movie lover's heart. The fact that Ledger cannot reprise his role will be looked at as one of the greatest movie tragedies of all time. He makes Nicholson's joker look like a party clown, and it's obvious how the character could get into his head.
The story is phenomenal, the script is polished and tight with no irrelevant or superfluous scenes, and the settings, props, and cinematography is top notch.
This movie should get no less than five stars from anyone who considers themselves knowledgeable about film. One of the greatest films in the last 20 years, hands down.
