I won't deny that I enjoy opera. Actually, let me clarify that. I like GOOD opera! The Metropolitan Opera in New York has been regarded as one of the best, not just in the US, but in the world. They go out of their way to get the best talent in all areas from vocal to production design. Alas, living in Arizona has made seeing Met operas something difficult until recently when the Met began broadcasting their operas live at certain times to select theaters in High Definition. This is my third year seeing these operas and this was without question, the best one yet. I could talk about the quality of the voices (all superb), or I could mention what I thought of the production of the opera (there are no words to describe how amazing I thought the production truly was), but I just want to talk about the quality of the broadcast.
The Met uses some pretty good tech to broadcast these operas with high quality. They want to try to replicate on some level the quality of the opera going experience for people who can't make the trek to New York, and with this opera they succeeded beyond anything I could have imagined. The quality of the image on the screen had a brilliant clarity that allowed me to see the sweat dripping off of Bryn Terfel's hair, and it allowed me to see the most subtle of effects that the marvelous Robert Lepage production had to offer. It was all of those things, but what pleased me most of all was the audio. They were able to offer multi-channel surround sound which works brilliantly with the music of Richard Wagner. I could hear a separation between the various orchestral instruments that almost made me feel I were sitting in the pit next to Maestro Levine as he conducted this epic work with both grandeur and finesse that only an opera of this stature deserves.
In short, this was perfection. Granted, I love Wagner's Ring Cycle and I was so very excited to see this broadcast, but nothing prepared me for the "over the top" performances from everyone involved as well as the technological perfection involved in bringing this opera to the movie house I attended allowing me to feel transported by the music and visuals to a completely different realm.
If you ever have a chance to see an Met opera at a movie house, please do so! I guarantee that you will not regret the experience!!!
I was hesitant about seeing this movie, but boy was I surprised! Not only did the movie pay homage to the canon (mostly) without being a slave to it, but casting and characterizations of our beloved Star Trek family was so amazing that any continuity or technical problems was easily overlooked.
Alex Kurtzman, a Star Trek fan himself, took great care to treat this movie with the kind of respect that HARDCORE fans such as myself would appreciate while making a fresh film that newcomers to the Star Trek universe would enjoy thoroughly without a need to know every aspect of the Star Trek canon.
There have been some Star Trek movies in the past that I have enjoyed watching over and over again. There is no doubt that this is one of them!!!
