Ryan Reynolds Un"Buried"

It isn't like me to write a movie review, but in this case I felt like I must. The turn out at the only theatre in Atlanta playing the movie was pitiful and it's only through word of mouth that this fantastic movie will get notice.
And "Buried" SHOULD get notice. Like the cork on a perfectly aged bottle of wine, Ryan Reynolds releases his je ne sais quoi ~ you don't know what it is, but it takes hold and tastes so good!
I'll be honest, I went to see "Buried" solely because of Ryan Reynolds. I am a huge fan since he was a kid on "Fifteen" and I've been watching him mature into the amazing man he has become. He is so much more that his early movie roles portray him to be and until you really watch his full body of work (roles on TV, his activism & his full range of movies), you have no idea what a naturally gifted artist & actor he really is. He is a remarkably funny man, but there isn't a dramatic feeling he hasn't used at one time or another as he continues to push and stretch himself further.
That being said, the mark of a good actor is having the ability to take you away from the every day and transport your into their character's life for the entire time you are visiting 'their world.'
Ryan Reynolds did that - and then some - with this role. I went expecting to stare at Ryan for an hour + and just enjoy being there.. but within moments I was caught up in Paul Conroy's God-awful predicament and remained there until the very last moment. Ryan was able to draw on raw emotion and he put it on display for us to witness. From the intense anxiety, even to the well deserved yet fleeting moment of comedic relief, so appropriately placed, this movie will keep you wondering...
You initially wonder how you could watch just one man in a box for the length of a feature movie, but the cinéma vérité styled direction of this intelligently smart script, written by Chris Sparling, was fantastic as was the mindful editing, both done by Rodrigo Cortez. whose creative depiction was so very real. The camera work, which never stopped moving, was unbelievable! The supporting cast should also be mentioned because, though you never see their faces, they are an active part of this experience.
I watch all genres of movies, but I usually end up laughing through the horror and thrillers. I find them commonly redundant & I ALWAYS know what is going to happen. Yet I must disagree with the reviewer who said the ended was contrived. Quite the contrary, the ending was startling to me & I enjoyed hanging on for the entire ride. The morning after, I am still in awe.
I can use a whole lot of adjectives to describe this movie, but I think that would be silly. YES, it is pure entertainment. I was completely enveloped within this coffin with Ryan & nothing else existed. However, if you want an evening of a pure adrenaline raising, anxiety inducing, psychologically thrilling movie, the words I leave you with are "GO SEE IT!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

GO MAMMA!

What a lot of fun last night was! "Mamma Mia" is fantastic and one of the best feel-good movies I have seen in a long time. I am sorry it is rated PG-13 , because of it I left my 4 & 7 yr. olds at home. They would have enjoyed this, too. The few more mature lines would have gone right over their heads. The cinematography is gorgeous, as are the bodies dancing around the screen. I couldn't imagine the adaption from the stage to the screen any better than I viewed last night. Executive Produced by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, it is no surprise that the production is first rate. This team never lets us down. Meryl Streep is hysterical as a single mom who doesn't know which of 3 men is the father to her 20 yr. old daughter. Her best friends, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski never let us down, they are as classy as we have become accustomed to them being, yet have such terrific comedic timing, you can imagine these 3 are friends for a billion years. I want friends just like them. Just watching the end of the movie was enough to make me and my 16 yr. old daughter peal with laughter. The 3 men: Colin Firth (my hero always), Stellan Skarsgard, and Pierce Brosnan (who always seems to stay himself) were terrific trying to piece together the puzzle of why they were even in Greece. There are too many debates over musicals; yet in our home, we break out into made up songs all the time & we dance down grocery store isles - this was as real to me as our own home ('cept Meryl sounds better than I do). The choreography is fantastic, and (other than Pierce Brosnan who really could use some vocal lessons) the singing was superb! I knew (as all true fans do) that Colin Firth could sing & dance, but never imagined Stellan could. He can. Meryl.... I was truly impressed with how she brought to life the fun and lively music of ABBA. Her vocal range was surprising and we walked out of the theater laughing and still singing. This isn't a chick-flick. It's a "wanna laugh and feel good for the rest of the day" flick. And if you happen to love ABBA or flash backs to our insane 70's, BONUS! Me, now I am packing to head for the Greek Isles!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
