I went into this expecting a fun, but ultimately forgettable popcorn flick. I'm happy to say that my expections were exceeded. About thirty mins or so into the movie, I was about as won over by it as a 36-year-old non-comic book geek can be. Some bullets to chew on: - This is definitely one of the best superhero movies of all-time. Possibly bested only by 1978's "Superman". - Belive the hype this time. Heath Ledger is nothing short of amazing as The Joker. An Oscar nomination isn't just expected, it's a no-brainer. - A lot of other solid and better-than-you'd-expect-from-this-kind-of-movie acting here as well. Some stand-outs include: Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Aaron Eckhart. And thank you, Maggie G, for replacing the underwhelming Katie Holmes with your solid presence. Christian Bale is good, but I'd prefer hearing him speak as Bruce Wayne over his gravelly, growling Batman voice every day of the week. - This cinematography, action, stunts, and special effects make this one of the most technically impressive films ever made. "The Dark Knight" is a hell of a smartly written and masterfully crafted big summer popcorn flick. Currently, this is my second favorite moviegoing-experience in 2008. But it seems almost unfair to judge a film next to the timeless majesty of "Wall*E".
