I knew what I was getting into

When a movie is at 9%, it's not just differing opinions. It's not just people misunderstanding the genre. The movie is officially garbage. What is most impressive about The Last Airbender movie is how thoroughly it grinds the source material to a pulp (not fiction.) Not since the cinematic debacle known as Eragon have I seen an intellectual property so thoroughly destroyed--and Avatar: The Last Airbender certainly had more going for it than Eragon. M.Night, I salute you for attempt at taking 20 episodes running 20+ minutes each and blending them down into an uneven hodgepodge of abrupt scenes. Your sense of exposition through mixed narrators, characters explaining what they are doing, characters throwing out random nick-knack details of their history, or even just stating how long they've been at a given location, was exquisite. Your choice of actors and actresses sacrificed what many thought were more racially specific roles for what you stated were the best actors for the parts. If those were the best that showed up to the casting call then I might have had a shot at a walk on role. I won't even get into the portions of the movie that were inaccurate to the animated series, that would just be piling on.
At least when M.Night made movies some thought were terrible like Lady in the Water or The Haps they were still stylistically HIS films. This was Cliff Notes crossed with one of those Scary Movie/Epic Movie/Dance Movie/___ Movie "satires". The $7 investment (including popcorn) may or may not have been worth it.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Comedy? Maybe. Good? Certainly.

This was a good movie, though I'd hesitate to place it in the romantic comedy genre. There were enough serious moments that I just don't think it compares (in a good way) to standard rom-com fare. I will say that not all of the emotional twists worked exactly as planned, but at the same time disagreeing with a character's logic/opinions doesn't mean the movie failed in that character--it just means you disagree with that character.
To lighten the mood in some of the serious moments there are great elaborative clips scattered throughout the movie (think Family Guy only shorter in duration and actually linked to the narrative of the story).
Though written in part by Jason Segel this doesn't let him off easy in the film as it becomes clear in the first 5 minutes that he certainly has no problem poking fun at himself.
I am somewhat reminded of Garden State for some subconscious reason. Oh and "The Count" from Sesame Street is going to be ticked to find out Segel ripped off his voice...
Go see it for a funny movie that doesn't allow you to make judgments about the characters as easily as Knocked Up or Superbad.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
