With all of the hype surrounding Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker, I was expecting to be disappointed, since I thought the buildup was difficult to believe. I was wrong. Heath Ledger's turns in a towering performance of epic proportions. It's impossible to imagine where he drew the various components of the character he creates, but suffice it to say it is totally original and archetypical. No one will ever be able to play The Joker again. Ever. If he doesn't win the Best Actor Oscar, the SAG Best Actor and the Golden Globe Best Actor awards, I just might stop going to the movies. That's how good he is. The movie is actually nothing more than ordinary every moment he is not on the screen. His presence in every frame is mesmerizing and spellbinding. Drop whatever you're doing and go see this movie. Right now. Do it.
