This movie is about what I expected. I went for the music: always an ABBA fan. Meryl sang better than I had expected, given the few things I had read. Pierce is wonderful to look at, and is definitely not meant for musicals. I wouldn't let this stop me from seeing the musical. When making a recommendation for the movie, I'd add this caveat.
I'm not particularly fond of musicals to begin with, but thought this one would be fun. It was for me and for my girlfriend. The theater was packed, and my sense is that the audience enjoyed the film...again I think the wonderful music and how it tied into the storyline helped with this. Setting is wonderful; an extra treat.
Have there been better musicals:? absolutely. But there have been many that are much worse. Fun, light hearted entertainment. Go in expecting to have a good time and I think you will. If you have high standards for vocalist talent, then you might be very disapointed.
