'All About Steve' is a movie for those people who aren't blessed with being 'normal', and those who care about them. If you are a strict conformist, don't see it. You won't like it. The first part of the movie isn't very good because Sandra Bullock doesn't fit the part. She's been good in other movies, but this one shows the limits of her range. She looked like she was trying too hard to be 'different'. It's still worth seeing for the end of the movie, and for a few laughs along the way. I recommend you see this if you don’t go out of your way to avoid or ridicule people who are different than the norm.
'Love Happens' is a bit of a downer. If you have ever lost someone you cared about, this movie will bring back the memory of the pain of loss. It's somewhat of a romance story, but seeing the way characters treated each other, I don't understand why they were interested in each other. They must enjoy conflict. Jennifer Aniston's acting was okay, but not her best. The ending was a bit uplifting, but don't see this one if you're looking for an overall happy movie.
I wouldn't categorize 'The Informant' as a comedy. It's a movie based on a true story. Some people find these stories boring, but they are interesting to me because they weren't made up, but really happened. That is what makes this story so funny - that the unbelievable things the main character did actually happened. The people involved didn't do funny things, but it's funny that they took themselves seriously. The humor comes from the irony more than anything else, and it gets deeper and deeper as the story plays out, including what the people involved are doing now. Unbelievable!
'9' is visually interesting, with creative creatures, contraptions, and machines that are what I imagine pre-WWI technology run amok would look like. The story, from what I could gather, seems to be about nothing more than simple survival, even if only by poorly designed human effigies. There was a strong feeling of symbolism throughout the movie, but I could never figure out what was being represented. If you like strange, you'll likely enjoy something about this movie.
My expectations of this movie were fairly low after reading other reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. While the story is typical horror movie pulp with the normal flaws, the acting, directing, and camera work were first rate. For its genre, I thought 'Jennifer's Body' was very good.
After reading the other reviews, I watched ‘Whiteout’ with low expectations. I was still disappointed. The portrayal of the female Federal Marshal by Kate Beckinsale was ludicrous. She acted weak - physically, mentally, and emotionally. The only thing she had going was a hot body, which couldn't carry the whole movie. There were too many situations and actions in the movie that were not believable to anyone with a brain. The director either doesn’t know cold, or used too much poetic license, such as having people run around with exposed flesh at 65 degrees below zero and windy. It’s too bad it was so poorly directed, because the story was great, and the setting was so realistic that you could freeze to death just watching the movie.
‘Gamer’ definitely earned it’s ‘R’ rating with (what I believe to be) excessive blood, guts, and flying human body parts, especially since the movie’s premise seems to be that people in the near future have become de-sensitized to carnage and death by video games. But for that exception, and the sub par acting by everyone except Gerard Butler, who played the game piece, and Logan Lerman, who played the boy who controlled him, it was a great movie. The story was good, and the action was intense. If you can stand the gore, by all means see it.
From the other reviews, I would say the best thing about ‘The Final Destination’ is the 3-D. I didn’t see it in 3-D, so what I saw was several Rube Goldberg-type methods of killing people, each trying to top the last. It definitely follows the modus operandi of the previous films in the franchise. I‘m biased because I prefer that more of the death scenes be left to the imagination, but the special effects and gore in this movie looked amateurish, and the acting by the younger actors was not very good. Even so, there is some enjoyment to be found in this movie, if you watch it with an attitude of expecting the cheesy.
‘The Time Traveler's Wife’ is at best an average story of love and the difficulties thereof. The time travel component was unimportant to the story, as they could have just as easily been separated for periods of time by more ordinary means. There was not enough exploration of the time travel element to make it a good science-fiction movie. The only thing that makes this worth four stars vs. three is the enjoyment of watching Rachel McAdams play the female love interest, and the fact that most of us can relate to the feelings of the characters in the movie at some point in our lives.
‘Extract’ is very funny if you have a slightly warped sense of humor, as I apparently do. It was easy to relate to how one’s life is adversely affected by the actions of the less intelligent people that surround us. ‘It’ just got deeper and deeper as the story unfolded. If you’re like me, you’ll see people you are acquainted with in the characters in this film. It was a fun movie to watch.
