Hillary Swank did a good job of putting a human face on the legend of Amelia Earhart. I don't know enough about the real person to know how accurate the portrayal is, but the movie depicted her as very self centered about getting what she wanted, which made her controversial at times. Even so, I felt a sense of loss at the end. The depiction of the time period was great, which gave something to savor when the action was slow. As for being a flyer, was she brave, or just reckless? See the movie and decide for yourself.
'Whip It' is another Ellen Page quirky, fun adventure. Nothing too deep here, just easy to watch, light entertainment. Put your brain in neutral and enjoy.
If you read the user reviews from the other 'Top Contributors', there is not much to add. 'Law Abiding Citizen' is a great movie, but the ending left me disappointed. I can think of at least two endings (without any changes to the story) that would have been better. That's why I give it four stars instead of five.
'Couple Retreat' is funny, but also reminds us that all marriages have problems, and they don't all have to end in divorce. Vince vaughn satisfies your thirst for his rapid-fire repartee, as usual. Some of the scenes were drawn out beyond their prime, which made the movie feel a little long at times, but still very much worth seeing.
Tyler Perry is back in top form with ' I can do bad all by myself'. The movie is funny and pulls all the right heart strings. The romance was a little weak because I found Adam Rodriguez' acting less than convincing. Other than that minor distraction it was all good. I highly recommend this one for everyone.
'Zombieland' starts slow, but gets better as it goes. It's not the best movie ever, but probably good enough to develop a small cult type following. If you're okay with the gore, much of the movie was very funny.
'The Invention of Lying' goes against the status quo, as I must with my review. This is not a slapstick, rolling in the isles comedy. However, it does have a large cast of familiar comedic actors, fresh humor, pathos, and deep meaning beneath the surface. It questions what is really important in life, in a humorous manner. I found it very good, but if you are looking for mindless fun, this movie is not for you.
'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' is a good, fun, animated flick. The only drawback was that all the delicious food falling from the sky made me very hungry. Take the whole family to see it.
'Pandorum' is a fairly good movie. The story was interesting, and the spaceship detail was very good. What brings my rating down is the slime, the grossness of the creatures, Dennis Quaid's poor acting in this movie, and some of the actions that didn't make sense taken by some the characters. A few changes could have made this a great movie.
'Surrogates' is the typical Bruce Willis must save the world by himself movie. The story is well told, and the acting is good, with the message being 'don't lose your humanness'. One element that makes some movies better than others is the tone set by the background music, and this one is well done in that department. I liked this movie a lot.
