Gotta Love Paris

'From Paris With Love' starts out slow, but once the action starts, it's all-out, and nearly non-stop. While the copious amount of killing wouldn't be humorous in real life, the way it's played here, somehow it's entertaining and sometimes tongue-in-cheek funny. The story has just enough mystery to be interesting, but Travolta's acting is what makes the movie. As usual, he totally owned the character he played. If you like high action spy adventure, this one is worth seeing.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Lovely Movie

It's easy to see from the wide ranging reviews of 'The Lovely Bones' that you will probably have to see it yourself to know whether or not you will like it. Personally, I thought that it was pretty good for the most part. It should be listed as fantasy genre rather than drama though. It would give people a better idea of what to expect, and be less apt to be disappointed. The two sides of the movie, the real, and the afterlife, were both good, but when they overlapped, it got a little too weird, especially near the end. If not for that, it would have been a great movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Pre-Greatness

'The Young Victoria' is tedious at times, and reminded me of movies from high school history class. By the time I was able to develop an emotional attachment, the movie was over. As the movie ended, the text description of what the future held for the royal couple elicited the biggest response from the audience of the entire one and three quarter hours. It was good to see the beauty and majesty of this bygone era however, portrayed with good attention to detail. The sets and costumes were quite visually appealing. Overall, it's worth seeing if you enjoy this type of film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Edge of Goodness

'Edge of Darkness' has a great theme and a good story line, but the trailer gave away too much information, taking away any possible mystery that could have added to the movie. There's too much implausibility and too much 'Ghost Whisperer', which makes it difficult to take the story seriously. A lot of the other acting was great, but it wasn't one of Mel Gibson's best efforts. A lot of the problem was Mel being miscast in the part. He has been great in other types of movies, and I can think of several actors that would have been much better in this one. Even with all its flaws, I can't recommend against seeing it though. There is enough good to make it sufficiently enjoyable to see. Just don't expect the greatness that could have been.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Disappointing

I like Amy Adams, but she couldn't drag 'Leap Year' out of its mediocrity. Having the beauty and character of Ireland as the setting is always good, but the story and acting were shallow. I saw no chemistry between the leads, and no logical reason why either of them would want to be with the other. Everything good about this movie was shown in the trailer. If you want to see a really good movie of its kind instead of a poor imitation, rent the classic "The Quiet Man".
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Good Movie

'The Messenger' isn't as great as I expected from other reviews, but it is good, and well acted. I suppose you could interpret it as anti-war if you wanted to, but to me it was more the story of a short time period in the lives of a couple of army personnel that had to bring the bad news of a soldier's death to the next of kin, with the resulting emotions and consequences. It's not a typical story with a well defined beginning and ending. This movie could, however, be quite enlightening to those who haven't previously contemplated the human component of the effects of war.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Drop the Kids Off

The most clever thing about 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel' is the title. Kids will like it because it has all the elements that they like these days - flatulence, gratuitous violence, and mindless humor. It's not as enjoyable for adults, for the same reasons.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Missed the Mark

'Nine' appeared to be a heroic attempt at being a great film, but it didn't quite make the grade. It had great stars and equally great acting, but most of the musical numbers were old, tired, and not nostalgia inspiring, and some of the lip-synching was very poor. The story itself was messy and confused. 'Nine' is probably great as a play, but it didn't translate well to the big screen. The movie had a few high points, but not enough to recommend seeing.

Brilliant, Holmes!

'Sherlock Holmes' is another one of Robert Downey Jr.'s persona takeovers, as in 'Iron Man'. If you want to see Sherlock the way you remember him in the past, you probably won't like this movie. Sherlock is all Robert, masterfully done. This one also has a lot more action than previous versions. One more warning is that the story is set in the (beautifully done) gritty, second industrial revolution atmosphere. If you're looking for bright and cheery, you won't find it here, but there are some great bits of humor to lighten the mood. Going into this movie without preconceived notions, I found it to be excellent.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

'Invictus' is one of the most inspiring films in years. It is a simple story, and slow at times, but totally engrossing. The acting and directing were great. My wife didn't want to see it because it was about sports (she thought), but she loved it. I didn't know anything about rugby, and I still don't, but that's not what it's about. It's about the amazing difference people can make when they do what is right instead of selling out for power, money, or vengeance.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
