Burn After Reading was the funniest move I have seen in a long time. The acting was great, and the irony was thick. That being said, if you're looking for a nice, tidy, one dimensional plot, this isn't your movie.
I don't know if the people who gave it five stars saw a different movie with the same name, or if they all work for Woody Allen. I've enjoyed Woody's movies in the past, but this one, not so much. Advertised as "Comedy", it had very little humor, if any. It seemed to be not much more than a study of people experimenting with immoral and self debasing lifestyles. Perhaps if you live this type of life, it will be funny to you.
This is not one of the best movies ever, so if you only see a few movies a year, and want to see only the best, skip this one. If, on the other hand, you see many movies a year, as I do, it is worth seeing.
I have enjoyed every spoof movie I have seen - before this one. It was very poorly done. I was only able to see any humor twice during the entire movie. I have not recommended against seeing a movie before, but I highly recommend skipping this one.
This movie would have been a total flop if Vin Diesel had not been the star. It should have been longer, so more time could have been spent developing the plot and characters. As it was, the story made very little sense.
If you have seen a lot of movies, you should know that there is nothing that hasn't been done before. This is a typical "underdogs overcoming the odds" movie, but very well done. It has many cheesy parts, but is very funny overall. It also has parts that will have you rooting for the "misfits", if you can find it in your heart to do so, and I think a good job was done of making the characters appealing. It's an enjoyable movie that I would actually see again.
This is an excellent and thought provoking look into the world of fanaticism, and how people can become so focused on their goal that their own beliefs are compromised and sacrificed. It also shows how bonds can occur between people if they don't have the "us against them " mentality separating them. I thought this was a very good study of human nature, rather than a mindless action flick, so you might want to pass it up if you are looking for the latter. Having said that, the movie still provides a lot of action, suspense and intrigue, and the acting was top-notch.
I have never liked James Franco in a movie until this one. He has finally found his true calling! He and Seth Rogen have good stoner chemistry. The movie did seem longer than it should have been, and the stoner jokes got old, but overall was very funny. Note to you kids in your late teens and early twenties that think older people won't get the humor: You weren't here in the 1960's when your parents (and grandparents) saw and did more things that allow them to relate to this movie than you can imagine.
As a man who generally likes chick flicks, including the first Traveling Pants, I was disappointed with this one. My wife didn't like it either. For her, it was too hard to follow. For me it was too hard to believe. From reading many of the other reviews, I have to conclude that too many women never outgrow their belief in Cinderella. I found it hard to believe, among other things, that a short, overweight, insecure girl with no personality, and a bad audition, would get the female lead in a play, let alone win the heart of the leading man.
