'Splice' is too beyond the pale to be worth seeing. If the people who made this movie were trying to be shocking and repulsive, they hit the mark. The synopsis describes the results of the gene splicing experiments as 'incredible' and 'an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence'. They are anything but, unless you find formless blobs of flesh or a warped cross between a rat, a goat, and a hairless human attractive. On top of that, some of the things the humans did with their creations were disgusting and abhorrent. The state of the current economy must be making actors very desperate for work to take a part in a movie like this. I rarely recommend against seeing a movie, but this one, I must.
'The Secret in Their Eyes' is a great movie in nearly every way. There is little I can say about the story without giving too much away, so just let me say that it is definitely worth seeing. The only two things that might spoil someone's enjoyment of the movie are the copious sprinkling of a couple of crude words, and/or the fact that it has English sub-titles. The sub-titles were easy to follow however, because there wasn't a lot of action to distract your attention from them. There was plenty of time to see, read, and understand everything. The colorful Spanish expressions and language gave the movie a richness that it could not have had otherwise.
After reading all the glowing user reviews for 'Just Wright', the movie was disappointing. It's your typical formulaic girl meets guy, girl loses guy, etc., etc. story that we've seen many times, but the acting in this one leaves a lot to be desired. It was slow, and not very engaging for the first hour and forty minutes. At that point there was a moving speech by one of the characters (I don't want to give too much away), but it wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the movie. See it if you love Queen Latifah, but don't expect spectacular here.
'Shrek The Final Chapter 3D' was very good. It was funny and the story was touching. There is enough sophisticated humor to make it as enjoyable for adults as it is for children. The animation and 3D effects were outstanding. This one is definitely worth the extra money to see in 3D.
'Letters to Juliet' is made the way this type of movie should be made. It is mainly romance, with just enough comedy to round out the sweet story. The acting is good, and the setting is full of old-world charm. Nothing real heavy here, just light romantic pleasure. If you believe in true love, or can pretend that you do, you'll enjoy this movie.
I like Jennifer Lopez, but 'The Backup Plan' was not one of her best. It tried too hard to be cute, funny, and romantic, and didn't make it. The only parts that succeeded were the parts where they tried hard to be gross. It's also the story of two people meeting under circumstances that cause them to dislike each other right off the bat, and then fight throughout the rest of the movie. What a solid foundation for a relationship! I recommend passing on this one unless you are just desperate to see JLo pregnant.
'The Losers' was okay, but not a big winner. This movie has a simple but decent story, interesting locations, good special effects, and some good acting, but something about it just doesn't click completely. It may have been better with different acting talent. Some of the acting was too low key for this type of movie. There were also a few plot points that didn't make sense. It's worth seeing, but don't expect greatness.
'Date Night' is mainly a vehicle for Steve Carell's and Tina Fey's comedic styles. If you like their brand of humor, you shouldn't have much difficulty enjoying this move. It's not the most hilariously funny movie ever, but it's one that you can watch and laugh at without straining your brain. I believe that having been married also helps to appreciate the humor involved.
'Kick-Ass' is awesome. It's not what you would expect from what you see in the trailers. It's not your grandkid's movie. This is a high quality, 'R' rated movie. The background music is great, and there are references to many classic revenge style movies, which adds to the interest. It starts out a little slow while setting up the back story, but once 'Hit Girl' is on the scene, it really 'kicks' in to high gear. I highly recommend seeing this movie, but be aware that even though there are several chuckles, and a few laugh out loud moments, it is not a comedy. Most of the entertainment comes from absurdity and from stylized killing. Even with all the death and destruction though, it ends up being a guilty pleasure, feel-good movie.
I expected 'Death at a Funeral' to be funny after seeing the trailers, but how funny could a movie about a funeral be, right? I was pleasantly surprised. Although the humor is mostly irreverent, and makes light of what should be a somber experience, I found it very funny. The trailers didn't give a false impression of what the movie was going to be, unlike others I have seen lately. What you see is what you get. It's too bad they have to use so many of the best parts of the movie in the trailer, but there is enough left to make it worth seeing.
