Eastwood’s last hurrah

If you are looking for an action movie here, you will be disappointed. ‘Gran Torino’ is 'Grumpy Old Man Dirty Harry / Archie Bunker' does ‘The Shootist’ (John Wayne’s last movie), only without the gunfights. The moral of the story seems to be that a bigoted racist who is unfriendly and goes around insulting everyone can still be a good person. I would have rated it higher if it didn't have all the clichéd racial and religious epithets. Good, but not Eastwood’s best. Judge for yourself.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A matter of taste

It appears that 'The Spirit" is not for everyone because it is different, but I enjoy this type of highly stylized movie. It is like a live action retro comic book. If you understand the iron and humor, it's very funny at times. If you take the gamble of seeing it, just don't take it too seriously.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

‘Valkyrie’ is a very worthy story to be told, but it was told in a less than worthy fashion. The majority of the cast were excellent, but Tom Cruise was too American, and too Tom Cruise. I didn't find his portrayal at all convincing until near the end of the movie. The actor who played Hitler was apparently chosen for his physical likeness to the original, because he showed none of the dynamic character of the Hitler that we see in the historic news reels. I also found the movie very slow, and near boring until the last 30 minutes, when it finally redeemed itself from being two star material. Judging from other reviews, this looks like a hit or miss movie. For my taste, it was over-rated.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

"Bedtime Stories' is a typically fun Adam Sandler movie. I don't know if young children will find it that funny, but an adult who hasn't lost his child-like imagination and sense of wonder should.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not what it seemed to be

Unfortunately, “Marley & Me” is another movie where the trailer leads you to believe it’s something different than what it actually is. Instead of a funny dog movie, it is an autobiography of a man, his family, and their dog. Many things happen that have nothing to do with the dog, such as Jennifer Aniston’s character losing a baby. Totally unnecessary. Also, the dog’s antics become tiring after awhile. Any dog owner who wouldn’t train their pet better is doing the animal, themselves, and the rest of the world a disservice. Now I will step off my soapbox, and say that it’s not a bad movie, as long as you aren’t expecting something different than what it is. Also, be forewarned that the movie continues beyond the end of Marley’s life.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Even though I didn't feel an emotional connection with the characters in "The Curious case of Benjamin Button", the story is captivating, and told in a way that is quirky, and at times as beautiful as poetry. In some ways it is Forrest Gump 2.0, and I mean that as a compliment. The settings were amazingly well done throughout the advancing time periods, giving a feeling of authenticity, reality and believability to this fantasy. The acting was fine, with the appropriate choice of actors. I can think of little wrong with this movie. Don’t get your hopes for film greatness so high that you will be disappointed, but do find time to see it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not Will's best

The story of 'Seven Pounds' is thought provoking, even though the outcome can be figured out by watching the trailer. I enjoyed the mental exercise of wrestling with the pros and cons of the premise, but it was slow moving most of the time and there were several implausible situations that detracted from the movie. Most of the acting was great, especially Rosario Dawson's, but Will Smith's didn't measure up. See it if you like to watch people struggle with their conscience and values. Don't see it if you are looking for delightful entertainment.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has a good story and great acting, especially by the young kids. I do not agree with ‘the best movie ever’ and ‘Oscar contender’ raves however. The movie moved fairly slowly until near the end, but was worth the wait. The stunts and dangerous situations the child actors were subjected to were quite surprising by today’s standards. As long as you don’t go to this movie with over-blown expectations though, I think you will enjoy it.

Some, but not all, of the animation in 'Despereaux' was very good. The story, however, didn't make a lot of sense. The lessons it tried to teach didn't make much sense either. There was an annoying narrator that broke in to explain the lessons to be learned, but even that didn't help. If you are looking for a movie that does a good job of setting a melancholy mood though, this one fits the bill.

Reviews are misleading

I was drawn to 'Milk" by user reviews from people who evidently watched it through rose colored glasses. Sean Penn and the rest of the cast did a great job of acting, but if the portrayals were accurate, Harvey Milk didn't fight FOR people, he used them, which led to his demise. He fomented hate (in his words) against the police, Anita Bryant, and others that didn't agree with his agenda. While fighting intolerance, he became intolerant. Also, it should be emphasized that there is same gender kissing, cruising, and erotic male nudity for the apparent enjoyment of homosexuals, but can be very uncomfortable for others, which calls attention to the insensitivity of the militant gay movement. I would recommend this movie to my gay friends only.
