...That Into You’ is a sometimes funny, sometimes sad exploration of relationships, and how people handle them differently. I enjoyed the way relationship truisms were stated outright, and then examined through the intertwined stories. And (to add to the demonstration of the theory that men and women think differently) to the women who say this is a ‘chick flick’ I say: I’m a man, and I found this movie very enjoyable.
‘The Pink Panther 2’ is an OK movie for some sophomoric humor and light entertainment. The main detraction is Steve Martin’s size ten feet attempting to fill Peter Seller’s size twelve shoes. If you are young and/or unlucky enough to have not seen Peter Sellers play Inspector Clouseau, then I think you will enjoy this version all the more.
It was refreshing to see a movie about middle aged romance that didn’t have the characters acting like teenagers in heat. Emma Thompson fits the part of a sensible, down to earth woman perfectly. Even though there are funny moments, “Last Chance Harvey” is not a comedy or a “chick flick” as some have stated. It is a story (with some very touching moments) that those who have a few decades of living in this world of broken people and broken relationships can relate to.
Note: “predictable” is irrelevant in a movie review. If you have never seen a movie before, you have at least a 50/50 chance of predicting the outcome, and for every movie experience after that, the percentage rises. It is the way to that outcome that matters.
Except for some of the characters' exaggerated accents, “New in Town” pretty accurately captures the northern small town character, from whence the natural comedy flows. Renee Zellweger’s acting style always annoys me, but even so, I think it actually worked OK for this movie. It is by no means a hilarious movie, but worth seeing if you are looking for light, clean entertainment.
'Taken' is a reasonably well done movie for its type. It starts out slow, but does a good job of setting the stage for the action and intrigue, which are riveting. Someone with either more coolness or more intensity would have been better for the lead, but Liam Neeson's style worked all right. The thing that bothers me about this movie (and others) is that the hero disposes of all his adversaries with a few bullets or no weapon at all, while never being hit by the literally thousands of bullets flying at him. These distractions shouldn't be enough to stop anyone from seeing it though.
I didn't read the book 'Inkheart', so I can't comment on differences, but I did like the movie. The special affects near the end were good. One thing that annoyed me was the fact that the daughter had an English accent, while the father (Brendan Fraser) who raised her had an American accent.
'Bride Wars' was a nice movie to while away an hour-and-a-half. Kate Hudson wasn't as good as she has been, but adequate. I found several bits funny enough to laugh out loud. I actually enjoyed it more than my wife did, so I don't agree that it's totally a 'chick flick'.
'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' was not as good as I had anticipated. I like Kevin James style of comedy, but it was somewhat different at times in this movie (by direction, I suspect). Still, there were several funny moments mixed in with the 'loser wins in the end' theme, so I give it an overall thumbs up,
Wow! This is how a movie should be made. I can’t think of anything to say about “Defiance” that hasn’t already been said. Everything good that I have heard or read about this movie is true, and everything bad that I have read about it has been false. One thing that did surprise me was Daniel Craig’s acting. After walking through a couple of movies as James Bond, he has proven with this movie that he can be an extraordinary actor. Definitely worth seeing.
There are not many horror movies that are in the best movies category, and ‘The Unborn’ hasn’t changed that. The story was average. The special effects, scariness, and suspense were a little below average. And the some of the acting was a little above average. If you aren’t jaded from having seen copious amounts of this type of movie, you will probably enjoy it. By the way, if you are going to see scantily clad Odette Yustman, don’t arrive late, it’s only at the beginning.
