The story was great, but the production could have been better. If the quality and attention to detail had been up to par, along with better character development and more realistic acting, ‘Knowing’ would be one of the top movies of its kind. As it was, it was somewhat disappointing, but not bad enough to recommend against seeing. Just don’t set your expectation bar too high.
‘Race to Witch Mountain’ could have been better. Dwayne Johnson’s lack of acting ability is painfully apparent, and the special effects, while okay, could have been better by today’s standards. Even so, the movie will be enjoyed by most kids, and by adults who want to see a movie that can be watched without the need for thought.
I generally like Tyler Perry’s work, and I liked ‘Madea Goes to Jail’, but I think he’s beginning to stagnate a bit. As is always the case, he uses his movie to preach a moral, and Madea to draw people to hear it. I don’t have a problem with that. However, although there were some good laughs, a lot of the humor was contrived and strained. In addition, the acting generally was not very good, and Perry’s directing lacks the maturity it should have for the number of movies he’s done. Having said all of that, it is still an okay movie, and worth seeing for some light entertainment.
I found ‘Watchmen’ to be a pretty cool movie. The cgi was good, and it had a decent plot. It’s very engaging if you listen to the dialogue and think about it. It might seem slow otherwise. It’s more of a thinkers’ movie. However, please forgive me if I missed something, but the one thing I didn’t understand was why Dr. Manhattan’s male appendage was hanging out 90 % of the time he was on screen. The fact that he was clothed 10% of the time showed that he could wear clothing, so why was he naked the rest of the time? It makes me wonder if the people who made this movie had a phallus fetish. Movies seldom follow the novel they are made from, so they could have covered him if they had wanted to. It diminished the movie a bit for me.
I usually like this kind of movie, but this one – not so much. ‘Fired Up’ had a few good laughs, but its is mostly the same old cheerleader/jock clichés that have been done so many times before. I think you will enjoy it more if you haven’t seen many of this type of movie.
After seeing ‘Doubt’, I had a strong desire to comment on the points made by the story. However, I realized that doing so in my review might cause someone to have preconceptions that could diminish their enjoyment of the movie. Therefore, suffice it to say that it is a very thought provoking, many faceted story, and that the acting by Hoffman, Streep, and Davis could not have been better. Well worth seeing.
For what I would consider a second tier movie, 'The Uninvited' was very good. Don't expect the same quality as a high budget, big name actor movie. Enjoy it for what it is - a fairly well done, interesting story.
‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ is okay, but could have been better. I like Ilsa Fisher, but her part was played a little too air headed and insincere, maybe by direction. When she got together with her best friend, they acted like thirteen-year-olds instead of twenty somethings with adult problems. Her character became more believable toward the end though. Just don't see it if you're looking for anything deep.
This movie is full of great international (hence the name) locations and intrigue, and sound acting overall. I thought that the movie was very well done, holding my attention throughout, but it is not ‘Investigatory Movie for Dummies’, so if you are unable to play close attention to what is transpiring, you may as well pass on this and find some mindless diversion instead. My favorite quote from ‘The International’ was (as close as I can recall): ‘There is a difference between truth and fiction. Fiction has to be plausible.’ This movie was frighteningly plausible.
‘The Reader’ is a very well made movie with good acting and a strange, yet interesting story. However, there are two things that keep it from being a great movie. The first is the unnecessary overuse of nudity, especially since one of the characters was supposed to be 15 years old. (Since the actor was pretending to be 15, is it pretend child pornography?) The other and larger problem is the lack of reasons, or even clues as to why the two did the damaging things they did. Even people who behave badly have their reasons. Are we supposed to believe that they did these things that had terrible consequences in their own and other people’s lives because they were so ashamed of their particular personal secrets? That’s too much of a stretch.
