‘Terminator Salvation’ comes through with lots of action and property destruction, good cgi, and decent acting. Some of the situations and reactions to same are not very plausible, but it is science fiction after all. Nothing spectacular, but worth checking out.
My expectations ( influenced by the trailers) were not quite met by ‘Angels & Demons’. It didn’t give the sense of mystery and suspense I had expected, or the feeling of urgency that I believe they were trying to create. While the plot twists and turns weren’t obvious, they were telegraphed far enough in advance that they were not surprising. Beyond these shortcomings, I very much enjoyed the beautifully filmed tour of areas of the Vatican and vicinity that you don’t normally see. It was also interesting enough that the two and half-hours didn’t feel overly long. Overall I was expecting a five star, but felt it was a four at best.
‘Next Day Air’ had me nearly rolling in the isles a couple of times. It started out slow and very ‘B’ grade at first, but did eventually pick up. It’s not a comedy, but a comedy of criminal errors in the ‘Pulp Fiction’ vein. If you like that type of movie it is worth seeing. Just make sure you are in the proper mood for it.
The latest version of ‘Star Trek’ could not be better! It pays homage to the original by capturing its essence, spirit, and character, but improves on it by adding today’s awesome computer generated imagery and special effects. It’s hard for me to judge the movie on its own merits, because it did such a great job of bringing back memories of the original TV series. I would say that it’s a movie that everyone should see, but if you grew up watching the original, it is a must see!
Can another rip-off of ‘A Christmas Carol” really be worth seeing? If it’s ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’ it can. This is a classy romantic comedy that is at times funny, and at times very touching. The movie starts out slow, but once the ghosts begin to arrive, it comes into its own. Michael Douglass fits the part of an erstwhile lady’s man to a tee, and Matthew McConaughey is good as a smooth, playboy-type jerk that needs to learn to love in spite of the possibility of having his heart broken. I doubt that it will become a classic to watch every year at Christmas, but I found ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’ very enjoyable.
‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ is your basic good movie of its type. The previews are honest about what it is, but leave room for a few surprises. The plot, special effects, and acting all went a little off-track a couple of times, but over-all are very good. The scenery shots were good enough that I was distracted from the story a couple of times. I really didn’t see anything majorly wrong with this movie. It held my attention from beginning to end. It may not be the best movie ever, but it's worth seeing.
This is a long, tedious road to a ‘climax’ of two women ending up in an unconvincing ‘fight to the death’. ‘Obsessed’ begins with Beyonce posturing for the camera, and goes downhill from there. Most of the acting by all involved looked like, well... acting. It wasn’t believable. The temptress was too smooth for someone who was supposed to be mentally unstable. As for the plot, it was too contrived. It is ruined by the fact that these supposedly smart people had to make too many stupid decisions to get to the point where it would end the way it did. Sorry, but this one just doesn’t live up to its hype.
‘The Soloist’ wasn’t as great as I hoped it would be, but it was good. It was pretty slow throughout, but Jamie Foxx’s portrayal of the gifted, but mentally ill and homeless musician was very convincing. I thought that the visual and audio demonstrations of what Nathaniel (the soloist) saw and heard added to the ability to sympathize with the character. The music used was beautiful, and there was a good use of symbolism in the movie. The best thing for me about seeing ‘The Soloist’ was that it made me thankful that I am lucky to be able to live ‘normally’.
I didn’t expect ’17 Again’ to be very good, but I was wrong. The story’s been done many times before, and I’ve been turned-off by Zac Efron’s previous hype, but this modern version of ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ was very well done. It was funny and touching, and Zac’s acting was so convincing that I felt that I was watching a forty-year-old soul in a 17 (or 21) year-old body. Definitely worth the price of admission, especially if you're old enough to have been in Mike O'Donnell (Matthew Perry)'s shoes.
Do yourself a favor and read the number one contributor, TheMovieRhino’s review before you spend your money on this movie. He nails it. Or, read the MPAA rating. It pretty much describes ‘Crank High Voltage’ in its entirety. It’s more over-the-top than the first one. I think the biggest mistake was categorizing this movie as ‘Action/Adventure’. It's actually more of a comedy, or a spoof of several classic movies of various genres, with video game style thrown in. Beware! If you don’t understand what it is, you wont like it!
