Everyone knows that this movie had a lot of hype. Although tragic, the passing of Heath Ledger may have been the best bit of marketing that the movie could have ever gotten. It was foretold that this was going to be his break out role. It was foretold that Ledger may have played a better Joker than Jack Nicholson in 1989. I honestly thought it was all just hype and that it could never be true, but I was wrong. Ledger's performance was the best character portrayal that I've seen in a movie since Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates trilogy-- simply epic. An oscar winning performance, to be sure. But...the Joker is only one character in the movie's (too long??) two and a half hour run. What about everything else..? The rest of the movie didn't really hold me, thrill me, or even kill me. If you're into run of the mill comic book / action films, you'll enjoy this one.. Good guy who goes bad...hero becomes anti-hero....damsel in distress...explosions...corny one liners. It was exactly what one would expect from a comic book sequel. The thing is, we've seen it all already in the first film. The only real problem with the movie is the run time. In the last half hour, i found myself checking the time, responding to text messages, and generally just wondering how much longer this could really go on. We got the message. Gotham needs Batman as both a savior and scape goat, and good guys can be pushed too far. JUST CATCH THE JOKER ALREADY! With the end of the movie came a wave of relief that it was finally over and an overall feeling of, "Well, that was fun." I'd give The Dark Knight an 8/10 but would caution movie goers to be ready for the long haul.
