"...or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." Our Dark Knight is back - and darker than ever - as his heroic philosophy is put to the test in this intense new installment of the Batman saga. Gotham is reaping the rewards of Bruce Wayne's night job: the mobs and drug cartels are running scared, and Gotham PD is pursuing them in earnest, led by a new DA touted as the city's "white night", a lawful counterpoint to the vigilante bat. Yet in the absence of this ordinary scum, "a new class of criminal" has arisen to fill the void. At the head of his class is the bizarre and terrifying Joker, a criminal genius who conducts his violent "social experiments" for seemingly no reason but to watch the city burn. Can Batman win against an opponent with no rules and no remorse, while still honoring his own code of ethics and protecting those he loves? Heath Ledger is amazing in his final role: he is as unrecognizable as the Joker as his character is unfathomable, and our inability to understand the roots of his senseless evil makes the Joker even more menacing. This show-stealing performance is a major source of the movie's darkness; the film is intense to the point that I found it exhausting. Awesome action scenes, shiny new bat-gadgets, and a wicked sense of humor help to lighten the mood, as do performances from returning favorite characters Alfred, Lt. Gordon, and Lucius Fox. Most of all, however, it is Batman's own presence who offers the city - and the audience - the hope that a light still shines in the darkness, and that the darkness will not overcome it. GO SEE THIS MOVIE. RIGHT NOW.
