The movie is almost perfect.
The only flaw is the monumental error commited in casting Gyllenhaal. Rachel Daws is supposed to be a knock-out and Gyllenhaal surely falls very, very short of delivering. She is so ugly that it actually distracts from the plot and lessens the credibility of the character. Add the fact that she talks like a valley girl lifted from Clueless and you've got a real problem. I mean, we are supposed to relate to the characters. We are supposed to feel vested in their emotions and predicaments, but when she finally bites the big one all you could hear across the theater is sighs of relief!!
Surely I (and many others in the theater) was bothered, but luckily the movie is too good to be ruined by a single person. All other characters are brilliantly portrayed. Heath Ledger steals the spotlight and becomes The Joker. Bale, Eckhart, and Oldman are monumental. And lets not forget Michael Caine who brings support by delivering a masterfuly subtle yet powerful performance.
Nolan's screenplay and direction are flawless. The time and effort dedicated to character development is truly appreciated by this DC Comics fan. Finally Batman is shown in his true light as the unwelcomed, unheralded hero, torn between the light and dark sides of his own persona.
Zimmer's soundtrack is deep and beautiful. It adds suspense, or softness, or epic grandeur whenever and wherever needed.
There is no gratuituos violence and pointless explosions and CGA. The visual and sound effects integrate seamlessly into the plot. Even though they are breathtaking they do not distract from the story.
Once the 2 hour and 30 minute movie was over I was left sated yet wanting more. But I couldn't help feeling a bitter aftertaste. I couldn't help but asking the inevitable question: In this epic story that simply must live to see, at least, another chapter, who will play The Joker now that Heath is gone?
Yes, I recommend this movie.
