Stick with Nigel, Basil, and Iron Man

We were very much looking forward to this Sherlock, and the "just OK" movie was a big disappointment. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law were both fine in their parts; they were the only strong parts of the movie. The story line was sophomoronic (yes, sophomoric AND moronic). The "think it through" device use to demonstrate analysis was mainly bothersome. The directing seemed to be driven by a desire to show off, rather than by telling a story, or anything at all resembling intelligence. The action movie effort was particularly wasted. This a character about thinking, not dodging explosions. Ritchie should stick with high school audiences.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Less than it seems

This is an extremely well done movie, but when I walked out of the theater I found I didn't really care very much about any of the characters (except maybe Queenie). Both lead characters are very well acted, but there really isn't anything particularly attractive about them as people (OK, they're pretty, but beyond that).
So when I'm done, I get a very good piece of movie making with very little reason to have been made. Sort of like a practice exercise.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie is long, complicated, and contains too many plotlines, but it all works. In fact, it is a very strong movie. I didn't believe all the bull about how Heath Ledger did an Oscar-caliber performance. Was I ever wrong. His Joker is unmatchable; the personification of madness and disassociation from normal reality. There is no way this character should work, but Ledger makes him completely believable and even realistic. Christian Bale is also super. Only real weak spot: Rachel. The role is weak and the acting was blank. There was no possible reason why the two male leads would be interested in this completely lost female, who didn't even come across as more than just barely OK on physical attractiveness.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
